Steam For Linux Announced!

Post by lisalover1 »

Hooray! Valve has finally done what everyone else thought was far too crazy and risky for a major computer game publisher to do in this day and age: Incorporate Linux support! Yes, it seems like the world's biggest video game digital distribution platform will be hanging with the penguins in due time; as of now, Valve has announced that Left 4 Dead will be the first game ported to the new platform, with their other major franchises such as Team Fortress and Half-Life to be ported soon after. Personally, I'm really excited about this. It's one less reason for me to boot into Windows. Sure, most of Steam's content will not support Linux at launch, but like we saw with the Steam port to Mac OS, it may encourage developers to incorporate Linux support into their games, since they know there is a viable distribution platform available on the OS. Either way, it's a big day for Linux gamers everywhere!

It is very good news. But Steam for Mac has very few titles so I imagine that Linux will have even less.

No, I think it's pretty neat.

But this is also true.

Also I'm kind of miffed that Steam got around to making a Linux version of their software before finally giving us HL3/HL2 EP3.

Id imagine the Linux Client would be easier than HL2 EP3. With the Linux client they dont have to make something that is better than HL2 EP2. They just need to make it work.

Now Linux gamers can enjoy the same second class status as us Mac gamers!

All joking aside, this should be a good thing. With all of the indie games that have gotten Linux ports through the Humble Bundles, there should be a decent selection of games to choose from (although some of those titles still don't have their Mac ports on Steam). Steam on Mac has gotten me back into PC gaming after a ten year hiatus, so I don't see a problem in sharing the love with the Linux community. Keep in mind though that this is Valve time, so "coming soon" could mean "sometime in the next ten years."

Great news for Linux users!, however i have never used the OS and not sure ill ever take my skills into computers that far, and i cant imagine how Windows would never be the widest used OS for consumers.

Looking forward to it. It likely wont be enough for me to switch back to Linux Mint full time but it'll certainly be used more on my machine.

I love Mint. I just love games more than Mint. :P

If Linux Mint played all the games that Windows does it would easily be my preferred OS.
