The Adventure Games Studio (AGS) engine is one of the best tools for amateur developers to make point & click adventure games. Some of these amateurs turn out some real pro quality stuff too. Here's a top 10 list from the AGS Blog of some of the better ones to check out. Naturally, it includes some of the games made by the infamous Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw of Zero Punctuation fame.

BTW, did you see that AGS got open sourced recently? Not only is there a branch that compiles on Linux now, but Scummvm is looking at merging the code. This could be the perfect cross platform Adventure Game creation suite.
