Re: Games Acquired 2023
Mazinger Z (Banpresto) is a licensed game and is apparently coming to the Arcade Archives May 11th. I don't think this really "paves the way" for future licensed games or anything, but I do find it interesting. Maybe it's different with anime/manga vs. Western stuff, generally speaking?
Speaking of licenses, the Arcade Archives version of Marvel Land never made its way outside of Japan. Some sources report this was because of the word "Marvel" in the title. Seems like they could get around this by just releasing the Euro version, which was called Talmit's Adventure.
Oh and the Arcade Archives variant of Jungle Hunt is the Pirate Pete version (so no potential Tarzan references, maybe?).
And even if you can't get Kung Fu Master you can at least get Vigilante.

I wish Sega was still doing their Ages line, since we never did get Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder. Of course, I'd rather see a Golden Axe compilation.

Yeah I was all hyped about Sega Ages and then it stopped hard in 2020 after Herzog Zwei.
Re: Games Acquired 2023
I’d really love to see the Macross arcade games. Macross Ii and Plus had some attractive vertical shooters.

It is a very, very poor substitute…
I imported Irem Arcade Classics for the PSX last year so that I’d have an arcade perfect version of the game in my collection. (It comes with two other “classics” by Irem, 10 Yard Fight and Zippy Race…) I enjoy it, but it’s pretty much impossible to beat it. The NES version is, IMO, the best version of the game.
Also, I spent a little time with the arcade version of Ninja Spirit. It’s fine, but the TG16 version is better I think. (Just like the home port of Kung Fu!) I’ll try to beat it later this week and compare the two versions in my review.

I think I had the opposite experience with Zippy Race. Finished the arcade version (Arcade Archives) but got murdered in the Famicom port. Can't remember all the details: it was probably just a case of infinite continues vs. limited.

Labyrinth of Zangetsu…<swoon>
Nice pick up. That one’s on my list.
…..
I added two more games to my last post: Hatris for the GB, and Frogger: Toy Trials for the NDS. That’s 90 physical games for the year! At this pace I’ll have almost 360 more physical games before the year’s out!

It's funny how many of the second gen / Golden Age classics ended up with sequels that no one talks about. Granted, a lot of them look pretty cheap and bad but I bet there are some buried gems somewhere.
