alright, so this is the other franchise that I'm a huge fan of so I figured I'd start a similar thread to the Resident Evil and Alien/Predator appreciation threads. The Turtles have obviously been the stars of many many comic book series, TV shows, movies, and so on. But they also have a rich history of (good and bad) video games, so certainly talk here is appropriate.

the original TV series has been my treadmill watch. I'm about to start Season 3 - this week if I can get my lazy ass in gear.

Season 1 is awesome. It's really just the mini-series. They didn't intend for it to be an ongoing series at first. It was just meant to be a short series to sell some action figures. It worked!

Season 2 starts really meh, but once the alien storyline goes away it gets awesome again. Finishes strong.


Anyway, I thought to start this thread after watching this over the weekend:



A cool documentary about the early days of TMNT. Focuses mostly on the Mirage comics, the 1987 cartoon, merchandising and the first movie. But was a great watch. I'd like to see an expanded second one that goes beyond.



Also, if anyone could break down the comic series for us, I'd be grateful. I only read the original Mirage run myself. Oh, and I have Michael Dooney's graphic novelization of the 2nd movie.

Kevin Eastman published a book called "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ARTobiography" that is an absolute must-read for TMNT fans. It's full of countless drawings from the early days of the comic with annotations on every page. The ARTobiography gave me insight into what Eastman and Laird where thinking back in the eighties and what their influences where.

For instance, The Ninja Turtles "Party Wagon" van is a seminal recurring element in nearly every incarnation of the franchise. This originated in an early Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic wherein the four brothers steal a VW Microbus to use as a getaway car. The police chase after them throughout the next few pages in a car chase scene inspired by the Blues Brothers. Eastman says that this is the first car chase scene in a comic book.

I actually picked it up recently but keep forgetting to watch it.

I've only seen a few episodes of the 2003- series, but I liked them a lot. Much darker than the 87- series. Reminds me more of the Mirage stuff actually. So I'm looking forward to checking out Turtles Forever.

My plan is to go through all the series in order. That's why I'm re-watching the 87- series now. It's kind of fun, cuz instead of collecting/hoarding DVD's, I'm just buying one season at a time as I progress.

Curious, how so?

I've got a few Turtle goodies here I've acquired over time. I've got that pizza box edition of the original movies +TMNT with the mini comic, art cards and the hat in there which is cool. Many years ago they did a 4 volume set of the original black and white comics done over in partial color and I've got that alone with the Tundra 4 volume set too that is the goofier cartoon style comic as well. I do have the NES titles and SNES too minus the fighter on both and the 1st GB game too. I still have a sealed TMNT 3 action figure of mikey in his samurai gear and a loose splinter with his clothes + bow/arrow. And then I have the classic TMNT 80s style logo/crew print on a t-shirt. Not much, but some fun stuff. Also I do have about 1/2 of those LEGO sets from 2 years ago, went after all the small ones so I could get all the crew (short of Splinter which I bought on the side) and even got that limited Shredder stand alone minifig too.

I really like that newest series, plays well to the original one in spirit and care, but also the older comic strip as well so it's got edge not just cheese so I DVR it whenever it's on.
