I decided to start my Alphabetical-By-Year challenge with a game from the year I was born that stated with A. I played a bunch (several hours) of Akalabethbut I suck at it and am giving up trying to beat it. I beat Adventure (2600), but most accounts have that coming out in 1980 instead of 1979 so its inclusion is spotty. I went with Auto Racing on the Intellivision (which I have on the original hardware but skipped b/c I hate the controller). I played "through" single player mode as best as one can, but in truth it is more about enduring the challenge of playing a poorly designed game than it is about the game itself. In any case, it is almost mid-February and I need to get cracking on this. Up next, 1980 & "B"...

Nice work.
Honestly the best way through Akalabeth (and the only way I've beaten it) is to exploit the BASIC code and turn yourself into a jacked-up Lizard Man.

I played with that but it feels gimmicky and not really worth doing...it was also working inconsistently for me. In any case, I certainly got a good feel for the game and am glad to have it under my belt as something I now know about beyond just its name.

What's next Dave? Berzerk?

Wait so Dave #1 has combined the alphabet and year challenges? Awesome.

I did, yes.

No, I don't have it in me to clear 60,000+ rooms. Is there another angle on beating it?
Edit: went with Activision's "Boxing" for the VCS.

Looked at 1980 on my RFGen list.
Intellivision sports games, Space Invaders (scratch that it's a reissue), and Alien Invaders Plus (Odyssey 2)...

Yeah, but it will get tricky when he hits rarely used letters. I think this places Dave's "Z" in 2005, which means Zoo Tycoon 2 is pretty much his only option.

1. Painkiller - PC
2. Front Mission 4 - PS2
3. Wasteland 2 - PC
4. Arcanum - PC
5. X-COM Terror from the Deep - PC
6. Military Madness - TurboGrafx-16
7. Unreal - PC
8. Shadowrun - SNES
9. Warcraft III - PC
I've owned this game since release, but this is the first time I've legitimately beaten it; previously I had just cheated through the missions to see all the story scenes. I was also heavy into Battle.net at the time and spent most of my War3 time on that. It's interesting how much the gameplay is different from StarCraft and C&C (whereas those two are rather similar). The heros and the general small army sizes (90 food instead of 200, basic soldiers 2 food instead of 1) really changes the general gameplay dynamic and is even more heavily focused on micro and proper army building.

Boxing is such a simple, guilty pleasure. The computer is a relative pushover on either easy or hard settings, but I consider the game beaten when you can TKO the AI on both settings (by scoring 100 points inside of 2 minutes). I played this on original hardware a few years ago but tried it on a compilation here. The PS2 version on the Activision Anthology is pretty faithful and adds a different feel with the Dualshock control scheme.
The Count is a Scott Adams adventure game (the 5th) that I've always had some interest in but don't have the tape attachment for my own TI99/4A to try it on the original hardware. So, I found a way to emulate it and, with the help of some peeks at a walk through here and there, spent a few hours this afternoon working to slay Dracula. I found out afterwards that there are versions with graphics that came out later, so maybe some day I will try to hunt up a cart or disk of the game...
