The Month of Horror PART IV: dsheinem vs. noiseredux

So for the past few years noiseredux and I have been posting separate horror-themed threads during the month of October for chronicling the horror themed games and films forum members have enjoyed in the lead up to Halloween.

This year, these two horror icons (lulz) are joining forces/facing off against one another in a single thread, providing you with one of the most compelling crossovers since Frankenstein met the Wolf-Man.

To get things started, both of us are sharing not one, not two, not three, but FOUR lists for your consideration.

dsheinem:

5 horror movies I plan to watch:
1. Evil Dead (2013)
2. The Lords of Salem
3. A Nightmare on Elm Street IV
4. V/H/S

5 horror games I plan to play:
1. Resident Evil 6
2. Dead Space 3

It is our hope that, as in past years, this thread will function all month as a catch-all for discussion of the horror games and horror movies that you are playing and watching, that many of us will have a chance to play and watch the same things and share our thoughts, and that we will collectively learn a lot of new things about the expression of horror genre in a variety of contexts. Usually there's lots of great commentary for both n00bs to the genre and to veterans, so feel free to jump in whatever your past experience!

You can start by offering or asking for suggestions about what you plan to watch/play in October, and once the first of the month rolls around, get ready to dive in.

P.S. - don't forget to consider the Together Retro double feature of "Zombies Ate My Neighbors" and "Silent Hill 2" as great choices to play this month

1. Evil Dead (2013)
2. The Lords of Salem

Two of my favorite movies of 2013.

4. V/H/S

Nice, I have this on my Netflix queue as well.

Some retro recommendations (more interesting to read about forgotten and obscure old games than games that every one is aware of like L4D, Amnesia, Slender man, Walking Dead, Re6 etc).

First survival horror game (not sure was it released before Sweet home or not, both are from 1989)

I think Dark Seed and Call of Cthulu Dark corners of the Earth need more recognition but you did mention them in those previous threads
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

awesome, thanks mene. I'm actually planning to play Clock Tower First Fear at some point. And the Steam release of I Have No Mouth is tempting. Also, thanks for reminding me on Illbleed. I'll need to pop that and Zombie Revenge in as well.

Also, I hate to cross-post, but

I've only briefly tried Pathologic but it's definitely looking very interesting and unique when looking screenshots of it. I've heard that it's a total hidden gem

I've only ever played a tiny bit of Pathologic. Didn't really get far enough in it to really get a feel for the game, but it certainly had a very eerie atmosphere in what I did play.

YYYYEEEEAAAAHHHH!!!!

Starting early this year!!!

I watched The Frighteners (1996) last night and thought to myself, "Man...I cannot wait for the October horror movie and gaming threads." (The Frighteners is a fun horror comedy directed by Peter Jackson and starring Michael J. Fox, BTW. It starts with comedy and descends into horror with an amazing third act. It is available for streaming on Netflix, and - despite the dated effects - I recommend it. I also think that Peter Jackson reused a lot of the setting from Dead Alive, but I have not confirmed this.)

I have 20+ horror movies in my Netlix and Hulu+ queues, and I am going to clean out the rest of my horror VHS tapes and DVDs. Accordingly, I will definitely be watching Salem's Lot (1979), The Hunger (1983), and 28 Weeks Later (2007) at the very least. I have not yet picked out a horror game for October, however...

I played it for like a hour... didn't like it... the dialogue is really confusing and the character is really really really slow (you can even see the NPC's "running" they look like walking on the moon). If those two things get resolved i would really get into the game it does have a great atmosphere and from what i read on HG101 the mechanics of the game are really interesting.

Now on a more positive note i TOTALLY recommend Night of the living dead (1990). Now im gonna to prepare a list of games im interest to play and share it here.

I was actually thinking of making an Halloween-themed thread ala Summer Game Challenge but wasn't sure there would be any interest. This makes me happy :) The five games I will be playing are as follows:

1. Uninvited (NES)
2. Haunting Ground (PS2)
3. Dead Space (360)
4. Resident Evil: Code Veronica (PS2)
5. Clock Tower II (PS1)
