February's Together Retro Themes: Poll Closed - FF Spin-Offs
Re: February's Together Retro Themes: Poll Closed - FF Spin-
Well, if TR begins to get overrun by distinctly modern games, then we can start to lock it down a little more. As long as it stays predominantly retro or Retro-adjacent I think we are staying kosher.

I also want to play Crystal Bearers on the Wii. This together retro has motivated me to play it along with Mystic Quest (which I already started this weekend) or after it even though it's only 9 yrs old.
This thread and the discussion has motivated me to play games and talk about them. I call that successful.

As I understand it, World of Final Fantasy is a newer spinoff game that is largely about the characters and gameplay conventions from the series' best known 1980s and 1990s titles. I know it isn't old, but it seems in the spirit of the month.
Look, I felt like we hashed this out with Bioshock last year...but there has never been a cutoff for TR gameplay.
In 2008, we played Diablo II. The game was eight years old.
In 2009, we played Ghost Squad. The game was five years old.
In 2010, we played Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee. The game was eight years old.
In 2011, we played Riviera. The game was nine years old.
In 2014, we played Psychonauts. The game was nine years old.
Beyond that, we have always encouraged people to playe newer games in a series. We tried to do some Quake Live matches when that game was new for Quake Series month. We did some playing of Puzzle Fighter HD Remix which was technically a revamped version of an old game (with new content, some old content removed or rebalanced, etc.) when we played it, people chatted about Puyo Puyo Tetris during Puyo Puyo month, etc.
No one should try to shoehorn TR into being something it has never been. Some months more easily lend themselves to participation by enjoying modern games, some don't. No biggie.

This was not always the case.Exhuminator wrote: old TR focused on one particular retro game per month.

Yep. It really shouldn't be hard for someone to find a 10+ year old FF spin-off to play next month. I already posted lots of games that qualify.Bone wrote:Final Fantasy spin-offs, there are literally four games on the Game Boy alone!
I'll post them again in a spoiler here:
If not, play whatever makes you happy! Let's all be friends till the end.

When I was told having 10 themes to vote on was dumb, I had to trim some fat. These are some of the ideas I cut away, if any other curator wants to use them going forward:nullPointer wrote:Can't wait to see what you come up with. I think half the fun of the new format so far has been seeing the choices presented by each curator
Float like a smoke cloud, sting like a shuriken. (retro ninja themed games)
FML, I'm out of grid paper! (first person dungeon crawlers)
My So-Called Strife (1990s first person shooters)
Observe. Plan. Execute. (classic SRPGs)
The Z-Factor (Mega Man games with a Z in the name)
The ideas I've kept instead are utterly terrible compared to those. I apologize in advance.

Haha, I'd have had something to play for at least 3 of those 5. I look forward to seeing what else you came up with.Exhuminator wrote:When I was told having 10 themes to vote on was dumb, I had to trim some fat. I ditched Sega arcade game console ports and Natsume games as options on mine. I recently came up with the idea of 'Pac-man games which aren't the original or Ms. Pac-Man' as an idea too. Maybe next year
Did you cut any options from your list Noise?

90s FPS would be my number one pick. Any 90s pc games get my vote!

I thought part of the point of not having longer polls was to NOT introduce premature discussion of what someone’s potential later pick might be. “Stealing thunder” is shitty.
