I remember the launch for FF8 very well - the hype surrounding it was incredible. I remember paying $99 for it on release...and it was worth every penny. That being said, I don't think many people remember just how expensive games were back then, even in the PS1 days.

EGM was far and away my favorite gaming magazine. At some point, I need to start a thread dedicated to its various - and very, very solid - "greatest games of all time" lists. (Published once every 50 issues, they are like the video game equivalent of the AFI's movie lists.) I have been tracking my progress through them for years, and other members may want to do the same thing.

Re: Post cool stuff from old gaming magazines here!
ugh this is devastating. From Official Sega Dreamcast Magazine #11:
Sadly, issue #12 would be the last issue of the magazine. Imagine how cool that would have been though if subsequent demo discs had come with various Genesis games on them? I mean, theoretically we could have even seen TurboGrafx-16 games as well, as the Japanese internet server (via Dreampassport 3) actually let you download Megadrive and PC Engine games much like the VC/PSN/XBLA do now for retro games.
No word on whether or not we'll be able to get our greedy little hands on the technology [the Smash Pack Genesis emulator] so we can slide you a couple of free Genesis games with each issue, but we're working on it.

From a 1984 Fantastic Four comic. I'd never heard of Atarisoft before. I like how his friends are assholes and only like him for his video games

I would think that the young men in that picture would probably be pretty excited to play a game titled "Manholes of Venus". (The young woman's reaction is pretty much spot-on, however.)
