Another one of those threads about overwhelming collecting

Post by noiseredux »

Prepare for a long rambly post.

So at a time, I had focused my collecting pretty narrowly on my GBPlayer. It was simple. If I wanted ANY game, it had to be on GCN, GB, GBC or GBA for me to get it. That left out a lot of decision-making really. But it also meant there were a lot of games I couldn't play.

Since then I've branched out and our household has a Wii, DS, PSP, PS3, PS2, Genesis, Sega CD, Colecovision, Dreamcast and NGPC. So on the flip this means now I have way more options of games to get/play. But it also means way more decisions.

I have a small apartment. For the most part my actual collection of games is kept on a single big Ikea bookshelf (though all the Wii, GCN, DS and Gen/SCD is kept in drawers under our main TV -- as those are more like my wife's collections). Anyway, I go through these cycles of binging and purging games as that single bookshelf gets full. And of course over the past year or two I've gotten more concerned with my collection being CIB -- which takes up more space.

So what gets hard for me now is deciding HOW to collect. I guess.

For a while I was really into getting as much of my retro games on PS1 and PS2 as they'd play in my PS3 so it was nice having this huge collection of stuff that was all playable on a single console. The Dreamcast is great for shmups, and has lots of exclusives, so that's a no brainer. But now I feel myself replacing PS1 and PS2 fighting games on DC. But this is more difficult. They look better on DC. And maybe even play better. But I have good fightpads for my PS3... something I can't easily find or afford on my DC. So maybe it's silly to keep getting those on DC? See? Decisions. Do I even NEED a physical copy of MvC2 anyway? I have it on PSN already and can play against people online. So is it silly to then buy ANOTHER copy of it?

Likewise, things like Final Fantasy drive me nuts. Take IV for example. On PS1 it's bundled with Chrono Trigger. On PSP it's got After Years. On PS1 I can play it upscaled on my nice big monitor. On PSP it looks even better than the PS1 version, and RPG's are quite excellent on PSP. If I were to just buy it on PSN instead I wouldn't have a nice physical thing to put on my shelf -- but I would be saving room. And I could play that single game on both my PS3 and PSP. But no CT and no After Years. Decisions. :x

And of course convenience and logistics play a certain role. I've got great arcade sticks for PS3 (so PS1, PS3, PSN shmups are covered, but not PS2) and Dreamcast (so DC and *some* PS1 import shmups are covered). Likewise, all light gun games I just get for Wii as they're the only thing I find a Wiimote good for. Plus my wife likes them, so we play them on the bigger TV in the living room which is where the Wii is. On the same note, because the Wii is in the living room TV, I don't bother buying fighting games or things she won't play for Wii because I just won't bother tying up that TV for myself. Convenience also means that many puzzle games and SRPG's I'll buy for PSP. OH BUT my wife likes puzzle games too. So I might have to buy a second copy to play on a console with her...

Do I want to collect more for a single console? Do I want to collect more for genres spread out over consoles? Are PSN games really the devil? Sure there's nothing to collect, but the convenience of sharing them between PS3 and PSP is so nice. And there's hard to find PS1 imports for like $6. Do I really need Puzzle Fighter on every console I can find it for? How many times will I end up re-buying Street Fighter II?

I'm quite sure we all go through this weird phase, but yeah just looking for comments and thoughts on how exactly you decide what to collect and in what formats, and why.

I went though kinda the same thing. I just had to tell my self that I don't need all these games. Most of them I did not even play. The way I looked at it was, sell the games and or doubles for other systems and buy games I will play. It really worked out better for me. Now I have less to chose from (it makes picking a game easier) but they are all games I love. If I want to play a game that I sold (hasn't happened yet) it will always be on e-bay for me to buy again. Just selling the games I never play has gave me enough cash for a Naomi setup and a few games too! Really selling the those games felt great to me and I do not regret it, and to me I still have an amazing collection of about 140 great games.

I am sure you know this thread, I haven't read every post yet but it has really got me focused on what I want to get out of my collection. I think goals are very important for every aspect in life. http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... &sk=t&sd=a

Now I stick to arcade style games, shmups and fighters, mainly for Sega systems. I do still play games outside of those and on other systems, and plan on getting a 360 also, but everything takes time and I am not in a hurry to buy everything at once anymore.

I know I am "missing out" on "good" games. I have narrowed my collection to strictly NES, Super NES, and PSone. I do have a Wii, but it has seen its days and is now relegated purely to Skylanders and (future) Skyward Sword duty.

I did once have a PS2 and a relatively large collection of games. However, I found that I would never get around to playing them all. I did enjoy games like Ratchet & Clank, but for the most part, I am perfectly satisfied with my older systems. So I sold off the PS2 collection.

I also once had a large DS collection. That is gone as well for mostly the same reason. I enjoyed the few games I played (Phantom Hourglass and Elite Beat Agents were amazing), but most of the games were going to just sit and wait for their time in the sun, so I sold off the entire collection.

Thanks to the Wii and DS, I have a decently sized GameCube and complete-in-box GBA collection. I am still waiting for the right time to sell. I just don't find myself playing these GameCube games, and I no longer have the urge to constantly be playing a portable system when I am out and about.

Some may see it as a cop out to artificially limit oneself to a particular subset of games, but for me, it helps me manage my urge to buy everything in sight. I have enough older games to last me for the next 10 years or more. I also enjoy the "research" I do when deciding to add one of these games to my collection. Each game is vetted thoroughly before joining the family.
Selling half my NES/SNES/PS1 collection (ending Dec 1):

@zing: I'm starting to think a little more about collecting-to-collect, and collecting-to-play...

Collecting-to-collect is what I've been doing for a long time. It's why I end up rebuying the same games on different consoles. It's kind of nuts. "oh this game is too cheap to pass up!" y'know? Or like "OMG! 45 Atari games on this disc!" which is great... if I ever got around to playing one of those 45 games. I mean, in the past year alone, I managed to pick up all of the Final Fantasy games for PS1 and PS2. And yet the only Final Fantasy games I played in the past year were XIII on PS3 and IV on PSP. But it's like I felt this compulsion to *own* all of those y'know... just in case. And now I feel myself getting into similar territory with my Dreamcast. It's like WHY did I even want Sega Smash Pack? I'm playing through Shining Force on Sega Smash Pack. But I already had it on the far superior Sonic Genesis Collection for PS3. Sometimes I don't get myself.

I'm starting to think a bit more about Collecting-to-Play, as in: I buy a game because I plan to actually play it. Now. I bought Catherine on Day 1. I spent the full $60+ on it -- which I never do. But dammit, I sat there and PLAYED the hell out of it until it was beat. And it felt good. A lot of times I will actually play through a fighter or shmup when I first get it, so that's a good investment for me. But why stockpile long adventure games that I may or may not get around to playing? It seems far more compulsive than logical.

Hoo-boy, I've been all over the place.

At first, I started out collecting PS1 and PS2 RPGs. This was fantastic, because my PS2 gave me access to the entire PS1/2 library, plus PS2 games were readily available at Gamestop back then. Then I realized that I'd never have enough time to play through all the RPGs I accumulated. Honestly, I'd play an hour of an RPG, get bored, and try to play another one.

I shifted momentarily to Gamecube and Gameboy Player. I loved the clean look of Gamecube games, and being able to access the Gameboy library was nice too.

Then I went into a Sega phase, since I wanted something quirkier. I began snapping up as much Saturn and Dreamcast as I could. Don't get me wrong, those are great systems, but I never got into importing so the library was stellar but shallow. After I played through the best games on those systems, I got tired of them.

Right now, I'm collecting AES and NGPC. This is an expensive proposition, since I'm collecting US-region AES and UK-region NGPC. I can't imagine purging this collection, but the catalog for these games is admittedly shallow, so neither can I imagine collecting only for these two. I need maybe a third and fourth option.

I'm also currently collecting for TG-16, which is nice since the games take up so little space. I've also started collecting NES since it's just so nostalgic, but I'm only aiming for the evergreen games, since a lot of NES games did not age well.

I also like to think long-term with collecting, so I wonder how people with disc-based collections sleep at night...aren't they worried about disc rot?

Wow, your fling with the NGPC is over already?

Thanks for the offer, but I've already got a copy. :)

it's MAYBE over. I haven't decided. Check the "I love my NGPC" thread for further details.

I've read it and you seemed like you were on the fence. So I figured that your putting MotM for sale was some sort of decision it wasn't for you. Anyhow, I'd recommend Cardfighters Clash. You've gotta stick through with it for a little bit, but it really is a nifty and addictive little game. I've sunk more hours into it than I care to admit.

It would be interesting to see how you manage the space vs. collection conundrum, and decide which systems to purge (if any). Are you going to go with fewer consoles / more games, or more consoles / fewer games? Maybe a blog post is in order!

Hint, hint -- TG-16 is really nice for the shmup fan with limited space.
