C64 game files - an odd question

by opa Wed Nov 18, 2020 10:29 am

So I have a d64 file and I know this game was originally a .tap (pretty sure it didnt have a disk release) so at some point in the past it was converted.

Anyway... the directory has two game program files. One loads the game and the other loads a cracked version of the game.

I guess my question is how common are multiple prg files on c64 games? The cracked version on my game doesn't even have trainers or anything so I'm not sure why it's there.

Maybe it had off-disk copy protection? The kind that's like, "Go to page 57 and type the fifth word of the second paragraph." Can you load the non-cracked version of the game?
I'm parting with some duplicate Blu-Ray and DVD movies. Check out this thread if interested.

The non-cracked prg loads fine. I don't know if the cracked program file is what allows me to load the other prg. I'm not a commodore wizard so I'm not super familiar with the ins-and-outs.

Apparently I'm wrong and Gandalf the Sorcerer had a disk release. Did not know that. I always assumed it was only a cassette.

I got tired of screwing around in retropie and loaded the game in Vice on Windows. Works fine. C64 emulation just isn't that tight on a raspberry pi it seems.
