Compatibility of PS2 and PS3 Guitar Hero & Rock Band stuff?

Post by noiseredux »

So I'm thinking of soon picking up a guitar and drum set. Ideally, I'd like a guitar and drum set that will work for both PS2 and PS3 versions of Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Is this possible or is it a mess?

The USB ones that I got bundled with Rock Band on PS2 work fine on my PS3 when I play either PS2 or PS3 Rock Band games. (Tested with Rock Band - PS2 and Beatles Rock Band - PS3, drums, guitar, & mic worked)

You can get a converter for the older Guitar Hero guitars since they used the PS2 controller type input, but I've heard it causes enough lag that it's unpleasant to play any rhythm games using the converters.

Unfortunately, the USB Rock Band guitar didn't work when I just tried it with Guitar Hero II on my PS3. Maybe whatever type of guitar comes bundled with PS3 Guitar Hero games will work on the older GH games as well, but I'm not sure.

As far as I know, the early PS2 Guitar Hero games (at least 1-3) all require the standard PS controller port. So I don't think the USB guitar controllers are compatible for those, even when played on a backwards compatible PS3.

You can use the Guitar Hero controller on all Rock Band games on PS2. But not vice versa, I don't think.

I do believe the Rock Band guitars are cross compatible on PS2/PS3 though.

And I think both the Rock Band and GH: World Tour drums are cross compatible on PS2/PS3.

Fyi: All the PS3 guitar controllers require a USB dongle, since Sony is anal about their Bluetooth. So I don't think those would work on PS2. But even if it did it probably wouldn't work on the early PS2 GH games that require the PS controller port.

So... A lagless PS2-to-PS3 USB converter like the inPin Converter could possibly be a good all-in-one solution with a PS2 GH guitar. But I cannot confirm how well that might work since I do not own a PS3 yet

Yeah, it's the Wii owners like myself that get screwed w/ this compatiblity crap. I was trying to research if you can play the recent Guitar Hero games (5 and Warriors of Rock) on the Wii w/ RB 2 instruments and the Gamestop clerk told me only on PS3 & Xbox 360 you can do that. I didn't ask about Band Hero though. Probably the same answer for that too. :?
I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!
