sort of, here's what i decoded the info from:
http://www.54.org/sage/condev/ff3ecart/
http://www.54.org/sage/condev/ff3cartproject/

i didn't cut traces, i just lifted the pins that would have the same result.

So the both of you tried putting DQ3 on a ToP cart. Have either of you tried putting it on a regular HiROM cart (like NHL 95)? It's really weird that it works with 6x 801's but not with two TSOPs. Only difference there is the donor cart used.

I have, it does the same thing, you have to lift pin 13 on the MAD and solder it to A22 for it to work.

I tried a ToP cart and an NHL96 cart. I'm thinking it is the way the rom addresses the SRAM. If you try a regular 4MB game like US Chrono Trigger, it still does not save correctly on a ToP cart.

If you lift pin 13 and solder that to A20 then the 4MB US Chrono Trigger saves correctly.

Exactly what I was thinking. That's why I suggested putting DQ3 on a NHL 95 cart, but you say that doesn't work either. Strange, because it works with 6 EPROMs on such a cart. So what's different?

oh, one question i'd like to ask:
if i want to make a terranigma cart, do i patch the rom with the 50/60 Hz patch, or do i leave it untouched if i want to use it on a US snes?

Hi Kogami.
Kyuusaku over on the nesdev forums has been helping me out with this stuff. I have not tested Dragon Quest 3 with my method but... well.
I will try it using the same method as Tales of Phantasia (piggybacking 27c322s). I hope it will work for me as that sram issue smells like incompatibility in the mad-1 pinout while using a 74ls138 + 6x8mbit eproms works fine. (http://nesdev.parodius.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?p=65228)

Either fix the mad-1 pins to be exactly like a 1j3m on your tales of phantasia cart (or save that cart and just use an nhl96 or something).
Wire 2x of your tsop to dip36 packs to a 1j3m (1 maskrom hirom cart with 64kb sram) but do not connect the rom /ce's to anything but a 74ls139 according to a pinout like this (if I formed it correctly).

So yeah, if this works - all credit belongs to Kyuusaku (seen him on nesdev and tototek). Also if it doesn't work first go, try swapping pin 4 and 5.

PS. (@zig)
Using NHL96 is the best option. I won't even lie - I picked up 20 brand new in box copies for like 60 bucks on ebay a while ago (sealed rofl). They're are enough of these turds to go around. I do however collect the Japanese copies of the games I have import/translation reproductions and would never open them up other than to clean and battery change 'em. True story here: When I first got into cartmodding I bought Illusion of Gaia - tried it out - loved the game (better than Terranigma and Soul Blazer IMHO) and felt bad that the snesdev guide called to gut the game... pissed me off.

je suis un Canadien anglais. Je parle français comme... uhh lol - je le parle trop faible, mais je visite toujours ton site Ultimate-console, je l'aime beacoup
