ps3 data transfer when consoles have different firmware

trying to transfer from one console with 4.90 to another locked at 4.86 due to homebrew mods, which won't let me update. will anything break if I use the system transfer utility to do this?

iirc I used a 3rd party software to do a system partition transfer to a different hard drive using a PC to do the swap to new hardware. I have no idea how that thing you proposed would go.
