I've got around 150 vertical shmups I run in MacMAME and got the (maybe not so) bright idea to rotate the screen and stand the MacBook on its side. So I fired up ESP Ra.De. & of course, it looked really cool.
I googled around to see if this would negatively affect the computer at all, and for the most part the answers seemed to say it's safe to do so.
-from the macrumors forum, general consensus seems to be as long as you don't shake it or knock it over it'll run just like normal: http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/ind ... 97081.html
-the PCAuthority product review actually found standing this particular MacBook (not the one I'm using) on it's side was the only way to keep it from overheating: http://www.product-reviews.net/2010/04/ ... erheating/

So, any thoughts on this?
It's one of the newer Intel Core 2 Duo models & I'm playing with a Wii Hori stick so I won't need to touch the computer at all while the game is running. Think I should just play it safe and get one of these to s-video the MacBook to my TATE CRT?

I think it sounds splendid.
(FC, AVFC, NES, SFC x2, SNES, N64, GC x2, Wii x2)*(G&W x7, GB, GBpocket, GBASP, DS-L x2)
(GEN, SS x3, DC x3)*(PCE-Duo)*(Xbox:500GB)*(NGCDZ, NGPC)*(PS1, PStwo, PS3:160GB, PSP.3K)

It's fine. I've been turning mine on it's side for games, reading, and while rendering stuff (since if gets ridiculously hot) for 2 years.

A laptop is safe to put in any orientation. As long as its weight is balanced between the screen and body or biased towards the body it'll be fine. That said, laptop hinges are usually pretty sturdy.

I would feel uncomfortable leaving a CD or DVD in the drive though.
The cable adaptor would give you versatility to play your Mame on the HD.

Just make sure you're not blocking any vents on the edge that's against the table too.

Yeah, I've been doing this for reading for a while with various laptops I have, I don't see why it would cause any problems.EllertMichael wrote:I've got around 150 vertical shmups I run in MacMAME and got the (maybe not so) bright idea to rotate the screen and stand the MacBook on its side. Macbooks vent out of the back of the machine, where the screen hinge is.Hobie-wan wrote:Just make sure you're not blocking any vents on the edge that's against the table too.

So this has been working out wonderfully! I absolutely encourage everyone to do the same.
Here's my current MacBook TATE setup with a program called Wiiji connecting the Wiimote through bluetooth and a TvC stick modded with Sanwa and Seimitsu parts
