Patronizing Patreon - Who do you follow?

Post by marurun »

I was thinking today about my various Patreon memberships and was curious about who all of you follow and patronize on Patreon. So in the interests of opening the door, here's who I shell out for (all podcasts):

No More Whoppers - low level, no extra content
What Went Wrong - low level, no extra content
System Mastery
Insert Credit
Retronauts

And I follow the Video Game History Foundation but don't patronize.

Honestly, I think I'll probably drop No More Whoppers soon. They hosts and their banter sometimes just really rub me the wrong way. I like them when they show up on other podcasts, but the sheen has worn off this one.

What Went Wrong is great for movie buffs. Cannot recommend it enough. The extra content doesn't appeal to me, but the ad breaks are starting to get really annoying, so I may end up having to spot for a higher tier.

System Mastery is just a ton of fun for people who like RPGs, bad movies, Star Wars books, TV shows, and liberal pansexuality.

Insert Credit is a fantastic little gem of DC know-it-all Alex Jaffe serving up questions and credits to Brandon Sheffield, Frank Cifaldi, Ash Parrish, and usually a guest (recently was Kieron Gillen who writes DAMN good comics). So good.

Retronauts is THE staple podcast for retro gamers. There are a lot of great gaming podcasts out there, but this one has the longest and strongest pedigree.

I've considered some others but I want to keep my spending reasonable and under control, and my wife has her own slate of podcasts, of course.

Interesting thread topic for sure, and I appreciate the suggestions, especially the podcast for movie buffs. I'm also a fan of Retronauts, and there are some episodes that are for subscribers only, so that's something for me to consider.

I recently just backed my first Kickstarter so I'm a bit behind on all this, and admittedly have not jumped onto Patreon to support projects just yet, but there are a few that I'm interested in potentially supporting.

Living Proof - This started out as a podcast on graffiti and skating culture, but Patreon subscribers also receive a monthly magazine, smaller books, and additional podcast episodes. They have interviews with a lot of NY artists whose work I've enjoyed over the years, and there are some interviews only for Patreon members that I'm interested in.

Backloggery - I was hesitant to join this site for a few years, but made the plunge in 2024. I've really enjoyed having an organized platform to keep track of beaten/completed games and another avenue to discuss them. The crew behind the site have done a really nice job and I'm considering backing them as well.

I subbed to the book tier for Joe Nobody aka elan.school (amazing webcomic, true story) and I've been heavily debating subbing to Hamilton Morris as he is and was a huge inspiration to me and I love his podcasts. He is a chemist and talks about the pharmacology of various drugs, and goes over the history of them. I can't always keep up with the chemistry talk unfortunately.

The Back Page Podcast:
Two journalists with amazing chemistry, sense of humor, connections to the industry, and knowledge of modern games. They have their own lore and amusing formats (like draft battles and Judge Castle, who kills listeners who buy bad games). Also well-edited.

In terms of gaming, I only really follow Puppet Combo and 616 Games. Did I mention I was a fan of PS1-style horror games?

Other than that, I follow comic book artist Adam Ellis. I've been a fan of his since his days at BuzzFeed and his work's only gotten better. I've been meaning to snag his horror compilation Bad Dreams in the Night. He's also done... ahem... the occasional NSFW artwork of his more attractive male characters.

And if you follow him on social media, does anyone else think his chibi artstyle for some of his newer comics is so CUTE?!
