New Years Resolutions 2026

Post by REPO Man »

I know I skipped doing resolutions last year, mostly by virtue of... well, you all keep up with the news right? But after somehow NOT getting spirited away to some shithole gulag this year, I've decided that maybe 2026 will be slightly better. Right? right?

So, possibly to help deal with the uncertainty that has presented itself in the creamy middle of the double-stuffed Oreo cookie that is North America, I've decided to embrace cautious optimism, near-dangerous amounts of hope and a sprig more political activism. That's not one of my resolutions, but God knows it'd be a bitchin' resolution to make.

As usual, I'll be scraping aborted resolutions and plans from years past and hope for the best.

 Revamp my living space. This past summer, my new landlord installed a split AC, thus negating the need for the window unit stuffed into the wall above my bed. This has also given me an opportunity, not to mention the space, to replace my bed with a loft bed and place a dresser underneath. I also want to see if my landlord can take out the big bay window next to my bed, patch up half the space and put in a smaller window that I can open. And that way, I'd be able to have more wall space for another set of shelves. The bookshelves I currently have, just a couple of cheap-o particle board prefabs, seem to be showing signs of bending in the middle. And my shelf for my Blu-rays and 4Ks are beyond full up. I'm thinking something sturdier, about 6ft tall (roughly the same height of my bookshelves) and 7-8ft wide and the better part of a foot deep.
:?: Possibly get into 3D printing, as a hobby at first that I can hopefully turn into a side hustle I can make a decent profit from. Not enough to quit one of my jobs, but enough to help keep the lights on. Obviously, I'd love to make more than what it costs to operate and maintain the 3D printer. As for hobbies, I could use it to make custom game pieces for my favorite board games and possibly to make as gifts for my family. It'd also help with another resolution I'd love to try...
:?: Build a custom gaming console. I'm leaning towards something based on a single-board computer like a Raspberry Pi, possibly a Switch-style hybrid handheld, running one of your standard Linux-based distros built around Emulation Station. If I go the handheld route, I'm thinking either a double-sized DMG-style handheld or a slightly larger Game Gear-like device. But if I go the dedicated non-portable console, I would LOVE to make it look like the Okama Gamesphere, possibly with the ability to dual boot between Android and a Linux distro. Either way it wouldn't be an arcade cabinet, both because of the lack of space in my place and because I'd love to do it as a separate resolution. Which reminds me...
:?: Build an arcade machine. I'm thinking a 4-player setup and possibly throw in some light guns.
 Read more. Not counting manga, graphic novels or trade paperbacks, I wanna try to read a book a month and hopefully finish a great deal of books I've started but haven't finished.
 Write more.
 Start my YouTube channel. If it gets monetized, my channel could conjure a decent chunk of income. Like my 3D printing venture, I'd just like to make more than what I'm spending.
 Work out more. I can't even remember the last time I even touched my free weights!
 Do more in the kitchen. I know that tossing a couple of Hot Pockets in the microwave is easy for someone like me who works two jobs year-round and seem to be dealing with burnout and/or depression, but it's just not fully sustainable.
:?: Host some kind of get-together, like a movie night, game night or Easter brunch. Anything with my niblings might be difficult given their schedules (after school activities, jobs, etc), but a movie night and/or game night with my parents, brother, aunt and uncle might work. God knows I'd love to be able to have more opportunities to justify my ever-expanding collection of tabletop games.

I'll definitely add to this if/when something pops into my head.

So, does anyone have any resolutions they wanna talk about, or is it just me?

Another resolution I've been thinking about is starting a local theater group in my area. I've got a laundry list of shows I'd LOVE to direct that runs the gamut to include but isn't limited to RENT, Dear Evan Hansen (the amateur production rights recently became available), Be More Chill, Spring Awakening, the Evil Dead musical, Carrie and the Toxic Avenger musical. I've also had an idea for a production of Julius Caesar recontextualized as taking place during a paintball game. And yes, that means that the title character would be shot with paintballs up to eight times during the show's run. And since Julius Caesar is public domain, I'd probably even be able to make a filmed version and put it on Youtube.

Right now, I'd love to do a big show at least once every 3-4 months with smaller shows and showcases in the middle. And then I'd branch out into after-school programs that could lead to Jr. productions of hit shows.

I generally don't do resolutions because most of what I want to do is keep going with what I have done. I exercise, I write, I have performed and made artistic works. I have two screenplays to my name, and my most recently published short story was last summer. But, I think setting myself a key goal for this year would be a good idea.

In 2026, I will publish a book.

I have several different writing projects in the works, a couple which could potentially result in books this year. Time to buckle down and do it.

I need to get back to exercising, after moving away from my college campus I stopped skating/walking everywhere. Also plan on actually using my kindle, and trying to read a book a month.

Sorry if I get in trouble for asking, but what happened to NYC Repo? Or moving anywhere else?

I still hope to move to NYC but that takes money. Plus, a part of me might be subconsciously self-sabotaging any headway I make, either due to pushing 40 and wondering if it's too late. I'm more than likely closer to the end of my life than the beginning. I'm also worried that if I do get up there, I'll fail to find my tribe and be even more isolated. Or that I'll fail to just keep my head above water and have nowhere to go but down. And then if I can't find my tribe or fortune, what other purpose could life have?

I know that it's only the seventh day of 2026, but does anyone have any headway, regardless of how much or how little, they've made towards their resolutions?

I started one of the Doctor Who novelizations I got last month. For those who follow along on Discord, I snagged a set of ten Doctor Who Target Novelizations for just under $50, which averages out to be the better part of five bucks per book when normally the Target Novelizations go for at least $10-12 each.

I decided that I'd only read novelizations of Doctor Who episodes I've already seen at least once. And I figured that the novelization of "Rose" was a great place to start, seeing as it was the first Doctor Who media I've ever experienced. Back on Monday, when I was working a 7hr mid-shift at my afternoon job, I used my two 10min breaks and my half-hour lunch break to get through the first six chapters. Granted, that's only 30% of the book, but still.

Other than that, I haven't made any real headway with my resolutions.

Eat right/exercise is pretty much my only "to-do".

I know it's cliche as far as a 'resolution' goes, but I have to for my health.

Something I read kind of put things into perspective for me. The tl;dr version is "small changes add up". And so far I find that to be true and less daunting than feeling like I have some monumental task ahead of me. Walking instead of taking a car if I have the option, choosing a healthier meal, etc. Really challenged my view on things.

Yea I don't like resolutions because they tend to be a ton of goals that you'll overwhelm yourself with, especially with lack of progress towards the first month. I do have a few goals but it was stuff that I was currently working towards a while back anyways, except for one of them. These were the WIP. It'll be nice if I finish them this year, but if not, there's always more time.

1) Lose 60-70 pounds (multi-year obviously). I lost 5 pounds so far. I can't really exercise anymore outside of walking because of medication side effects, but I still enjoy cooking now that I don't work in a kitchen anymore, so that aspect is going well.
2) Watch 10,000 films. I'm at 9,473 right now. It's definitely feasible to do it this year after the (awful) news that I can't go to school after all until my loans are paid off which will take a few years depending on when my partner and mom can help (they both have their own loans to deal with first)
3) Work on these lists as the highest priorities
a) 80s-90s very obscure horror
b) Canuxploitation/tax shelter films
c) Various country lists created by scholars and institutions, especially gaining full-on mastery of some (India, Africa, and Arab countries in general shouldn't take too long)
d) The Sixties Shockers book
e) Bollywood horror
4) Play some Switch games now that my partner has a Switch 2 (they love to watch me play it during their off-times anyways)
5) Write a review compilation/scholarly analysis book. I have one WIP that is going well, and I will spend the next few months to a year researching the canuxploitation/tax shelter films so that I can write a book on this. I won't have credentials because of the student loans issue, but at least I'll be filling in gaps, which I think helps with the film book market.

Have you seen Mahakaal? It's pretty much a Bollywood version of Nightmare on Elm Street.
