(Seriously, though, the October horror film thread belongs to Noise. I would feel awkward starting it myself.)

Alright so like last year I'm going to chronicle all the horror films/shows I watch throughout the month of October and invite you all to do the same. Pictures, synopsis, opinions, arguments, etc are all welcome. I won't bother to mention what a watched over the weekend (The Others and Maniac) because it wasn't October yet and as I've said before -- around the noiseredux household, everyday is Halloween.

My wife and I started a week early this year, but none of the movies we watched were good enough ("Don't Look Now") or scary enough ("Black Death", "Heavenly Creatures") to merit placement on the "noiseredux October horror film spooktacular 2012" thread (especially since we watched them in late September).

Not to stand on formality, however, we knocked a couple out a few over the weekend that deserve mentioning:

The Resurrected (1992) - If you can get over: (1) the fact that the main character has a mullet (whish was respectable in 1992); and (2) the fact that most of the cast are terrible actors, you will find a very, very solid Lovecraft adaptation. It starts out a little slowly, and the somewhat weak ending is not helped by dated special effects. The middle, however - particularly the section where the leads explore the catacombs/dungeon/laboratory with very, very limited lighting - is just spectacular. Chris Sarandon, who is always excellent, also kills it in multiple(?) roles. In short, I highly recommend this move (and it is readily available on Netflix streaming!).

The Corpse Vanishes (1942) - My wife and I watched the movie get the MST3K treatment. Like all of the best MST3K episodes, however, the underlying film - while not particularly good - is imminently watchable and very good by late-period Bela Lugosi standards. The MST3K commentary for this film, while not legendary, is quite good. Accordingly, if you are looking for a mindless, semi-creepy film and a good laugh, I recommend this episode (which is also readily available on Netflix streaming!).

The Invisible Man (1933) - I have seen most of the classic Universal horror films, and this one now ranks among my favorites. It is not particularly scary, but it is very enjoyable. The effects have actually held up, which is quite a feat considering when the film was released. Also, the inimitable Claude Rains does fantastic voice work in the title role. Like the other two, this is also available on Netflix streaming.

In any event, we have the following films in my DVD pile for this month: 28 Weeks Later, The Abominable Doctor Phibes, Cube, The Hunger, Let Me In, Salem's Lot (1979), and Zodiac. (I also, clearly, have Netflix streaming.) Which movie should we head to next? Are there any we should just skip?

^this is a good one. And a tip for folks not sure where to start with Lovecraft adaptations. Look at the back of the DVD case. If you see the names Stuart Gordon, Brian Yuzna or Dan Obannon then you know it's worth watching.

Speaking of I want everyone to watch Dagon this month. I think it's also streaming. But especially fans of RE4 NEED to see Dagon, my favorite Lovecraft film.

I'll be skipping Dagon, if only because I've seen it so many times, Noise! I'm thinking about moving all the horror films in my Netflix queue up to tue front of the list, but even if I don't, Bad Taste should arrive in the mail soon. I'll let you know what I think. I wonder, is it as messy as Dead Alive?

Dead Alive is gorier, at least for its finale. But Bad Taste is... grosser? I didn't really enjoy Bad Taste. But I think Dead Alive is great.

Yeah, I don't think anything could beat the puddle of goop that is the end of Dead Alive. I think I will move up those movies though. I haven't been talking about films on here since I work with them, but this is personal and it is the right time of year.

The Stuff (1985)

Bought this on dvd a while back, but just got around to watching it. This movie is crazy stupid, but i remember loving it when I was around 8 or so. If you've think modern horror movies don't have enough killer snack foods, then this movie might just be for you. Campy, totally eighties, and an awesome Garret Morris death scene(spoiler!)
A great way to start off the month.

Oh man, I love The Stuff! A former federal agent teams up with a black cookie creator and a far right militia to save the world from a deadly wanna-be sherbert. What's not to love?

Behold, my tentative, and slightly tilting, selection:



Some of them are old favorites, some of them are brand new to me (and in some cases, brand new and unopened), and some of them are re-makes of classics I've already seen (Such as Let Me In and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre). And in the instance of Dawn of the Dead, I've just recently got the original, so I'll be watching that and the remake, just to spice things up.

The AMC Monsterfest collection has 4 movies: The Atomic Brain, The Brain That Wouldn't Die, Carnival of Souls, and Night Tide. I'll also be spending a lot of time (well, a lot of time after I get back from vacation, anyway) watching the Syfy channel, AMC, and TCM (must remember to record The Walking Dead while I'm gone....).

If I'm lucky, I'll even be able to squeeze in my yearly viewing of Hocus Pocus and Earnest Scared Stupid, as well as a horror themed game in there somewhere.... I just love October


Oh, and in case anyone was wondering, tonight is Cabin in the Woods night. I missed out seeing it while it was in theatres, so I thought I'd start the month off with a bang.

Great choice of movies! Also... Hatchet II is insanely gory and violent so I wouldn't say it's a date movie .
