Should that just be its own thread though? Or is this specific enough to this case?

Also, should we go with the JRPG as a subgenre or simply an overarching term for all RPGs produced by Japanese companies?

And secondly, would such a list be able to incorporate multiple entries from the same series?

Well damn: http://www.metacritic.com/game/wii/the-last-story/critic-reviews

Last time I solely rely on Game Informer (6/10) and Destructoid (4/10) for my reviews :S Definitely on my 'to play' list, after Tokyo Sessions #FE.
If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?

Never trust them about Nintendo exclusives in general. They've fallen into IGN's "if it's not the prettiest game yet, it's shit" nonsense.

Oh boy. I wouldn't rely on any of the big name sites for reviews. I happen to like plenty of stuff with low Metacritic ratings. Case in point, this game:

That's a very accurate description of their modern review process.

Game Informer cost me a copy of Shantae. They actually scored that game a 3/10 (a freaking three, for goodness sake!), and I passed on buying a cheap copy in GameStop because of that. The regret. The shame.

Actually, so y'all can read the horrible review yourselves, I took a pic of it a while back!

So I've never played Shantae, but that review is just terrible. It's like it was written by someone who had never played a platformer in their lives. But the best part is the graphics critique. Apparently you have to score down a GBC game for looking like a GBC game.

So they give Shantae a 3/10 and 6/10, but gave Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku a 7.5/10 and 8.5/10 on the same page. Yet if you check GameRankings, Shantae sits at 77.88% with 13 reviews. While Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku sits at 51.08% with 31 reviews. What a piece of trash excuse for a gaming rag.

I don't know man, Shantae is probably THE best looking GBC game of all time. Someone would have to be a really ignorant critic to not recognize its technological achievement and at least respect its graphics.
