Will I like Ni No Kuni II?

I adored the look of Ni No Kuni on PS3. However I really disliked the Pokémon style battle stuff. I played many hours of it, but never finished it. From what I can tell there is much less of this in the 2nd game.

Also, I watched some non spoilerly gameplay of the early parts of the game. One of the character has a semi auto pistol. Kind of turns me off. I mean, I love firearms in games, and real life, but it just doesn't seem to fit the world. Does the game at least have a very good explanation as to why the dood is packin heat? Please answer this without a spoiler, lol.
