I was more meaning, that because the first three are "top-tier beat em ups" has nothing to do with how this game will turn out, as the only thing in common is the IP.

Yeah there have been great rivivals of series, but for every game that turns out like Sonic Mania there is like five more Sonic 4, Double Dragon 4, etc, did.

Hope it turns out great as I love SoR and FF.

EDIT: Read my first post back, bit over the top, but still, just getting over the hype around all the recent reviving of retro franchises.

Overstating this point.
In early iterations within a series there's typically good continuity of personnel in key roles. There's a much lesser loss felt when having some turnover in the code-monkeys, and so forth, as opposed to losing key members of a franchise, as evidenced by series like Suikoden, Ys, Tactics Ogre/Ogre Battle/Final Fantasy Tactics, Resident Evil, etc, etc. They may not be noticed much by the uninitiated, and there's no reason those later games can't also be good in their own right, but a part of a series dies with its creators' departure.

I think this warrants mentioning:

Streets of Rage 2 was not made by the same team that made Streets of Rage! Not only that, but it was Ancient's first Mega Drive game at all. So, any idea of a game losing appeal due to staff changes is pretty moot here, unless you only like Streets of Rage 1

Not that that frees the game from criticism, I'm not entirely sold on it so far, but it being good or bad based on personnel change is pretty meaningless. The Ninjawarriors Again is vastly superior to the original game, even though its sequel was handled by a new team. Happens all the time, and I think I'd be more confident in a smaller team to handle the IP than Sega themselves (Which is what people wanting the "original" devs are asking for, even though most people just think SoR1 is okay).

I feel like we had a similar conversation when discussing the old Shining games versus new Shining games, so probably not worth totally rehashing... but in general I'll side with Bogus on the matter. Teams can be nebulous to begin with, so outside of like auteurs you might not even realize it when going from one game in a series to the next. But even if it's a completely DIFFERENT team, I'm just as interested in how some new team handles a game entry in a series that I love. To me it's like having a standard tune being put into the hands of different jazz combos with different instruments. It's interesting to see how each group might approach the same piece. Shrug.

I want to believe this is going to be good, but I’ve been run over by the hype train too many times.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 4
  • Streets of Rage Remake
  • Double Dragon IV
  • Ninja Turtles Arcade Attack (DS)
I believed the hype for all these games, and I was disappointed every time. I guess that makes me jaded.

I still want to believe this will be good. Maybe that makes me a fool.

Its fair to be skeptical, but its worth mentioning classic hype re-releases that did turn out at least okay, if not stellar.

Sonic Mania
Double Dragon Neon
Bionic Commando: Re-Armed
Wild Guns: Reloaded
Curse of the Moon

Its not impossible for this to turn out decent. From what I understand, this dev's one ofhter game, Streets of Fury (Clearly they were already fans, just like the Mania devs were) is mechanically sound, and did poorly moreso due to its ridiculous looks.

I'm not all in on this, I wouldn't even place a bet on it being good, but I'm not jaded by it either, there is a decent chance it'll turn out okay. And lets be honest, most people don't even like SoR3, so even if Ancient were making it, there's a 50/50 chance no one likes it.

Every series is different, so of course it's not a particular rule that applies without exception. My statement was meant more in terms of games that are more deeply interconnected in their story, or world, for instance. Thus my choices of examples. It might have made more sense to pose a hypothetical question about how much excitement there would have been for Shenmue III if it had instead been licensed to, I don't know, CD Projekt Red, or something. I don't personally have any vested interest in a new SoR sequel. It could be good. It could be bad. Neither result will really affect me much (even though I do enjoy and appreciate the first three games). Part of that is due to the degree of separation from Ancient, though, I will say that. I also don't think it's unreasonable to say that it seems like an officially licensed fan project.

Ultimately, my point is probably that not expressing excitement over something does not necessarily preclude disappointment in it.

Sonic Mania and Wonder Boy III are standouts for me. With Lizardcube and DotEmu at the helm, I feel this has a good chance to go extremely well. Lizardcube and DotEmu have my full support.

I want Yuzo Koshiro to be involved, and I'd like for a third character to be thrown into the mix. Those are my two asks. Koshiro doesn't need to even compose, but perhaps get him, the producer, and composers sit down and try to emulate the sound and vibe that "fits" the series.

I'm not entirely convinced on the art style but it may grow on me. If the game play is solid, and it genuinely feels like a Streets of Rage game, then I think I'll be pleased. Streets of Rage 2 is one of my top 5 games on the Genesis.

I think Sonic Mania is what makes the graphical style here a bit hard to swallow, since Sonic Mania had the best graphics in all of 2017 it would have been cool to see more pixel art and sprites again for other new SEGA throwbacks.

But yeah, doesn't look bad and the glimpses of action look very promising.

I would also have loved to see the game take a more traditional approach and use sprites. I guess this does look worlds better than the dev's other work though.

And imma let you finish, but Nier: Automata was the most beautiful game last year

For sure man, I wasn't trying to dispute your point full-stop or anything, its certainly valid, I just found that take a little out of place here in particular, as its been a common topic of discussion regarding this game, and it seems like most people don't even know the game has already switched hands once, for the better.

It was more a topic I felt worth bringing up, than a method to invalidate. Ancient not being involved with the 1st game means they managed to do something good with a new series, having only worked on one game prior to this (Sonic MS/GG, a fine game but not particularly stunning). This is pretty much the exact situation we are in, except that we already now know Ancient is good.

But then again, Ancient only made 2 SoR games, and most people seem to not like their 2nd go at it in SoR3. So, decent chance even having the Koshiro duo on task could have lead to disappointment. I love SoR3 and Koshiro, and would be infinitely more excited were they working on it, but getting a dev that clearly loves SoR enough to have already made a fan game on their own, one that mechanically works well, is probably the 2nd best thing that could have happened, and is much better than Sega handling it in-house.
