I don't think that Sega could compete, financially speaking, with Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony in developing a 3D powerhouse console.
...BUT, there is a unique opportunity they could take advantage of. I think there is room in the market for a 2D oriented machine, built to process sprites and the kinds of games that Sega really made their name on. If it was cheap to produce, cheap to purchase, and cheap to develop for I think Sega could capture their own niche market.

Look at what Nintendo did with the Wii. Its underpowered compared to the PS3 and 360, doesn't have HD and very limited storage. A great and innovative idea goes a long way. Nintendo showed everyone that you don't need a super expensive machine to succeed in todays console wars. Maybe Sega could pull it off, they are known for quirky ideas as well.

Well, Thanks for the false hope, Naka!

I'd buy that! I'd call it the Sega Exodus
and Segata Sanshiro could visit us from the Heavens

If Sega made a new 2D console it would probably sell as many units as there are members on this forum.

I really don't see how Sega will ever successful again
please everyone, lets not forget, the last successful Sega console was in '89 I believe, and that is the genesis. I am not sure if the master system was a success.
32X=fail
Sega CD= Fail
Saturn=Fail hardware and price wise, gaming wise compared to its competitors (n64,psx)
Dreamcast= Business fail, hardware runs backups with no mods FAIL!
Shenmue= Business Fail
Sonic 3D= Fail
I don't know how many other fails are out there,
This is the truth, Sega simply is not a successful company, they are innovative but they can't keep their $h!t together.
If they launch Dreamcast 2, the company will close for good.
Remember back in the day systems differed and were unique(PS2 DVD playback, Xbox online, n64 powerful cartridge, PSX CD capabilities )...
Now its just a matter of how much can you market your system because
ps3 and 360 is just about the same, they both can do almost the exact same thing.
Do you think Sega can market their brand more than Microsoft and Sony? Especially when they say Microsoft and Sony are selling their consoles at a loss as far as i hear?
and as far as the Wii goes, i don't see Sega walking the Nintendo path. I must say Nintendo got lucky with the Wii.
But Dreamcast 2 can be a handheld, there is a place, and the market is not as fierce.

There is zero credibility to what he's saying. It's just Naka drawing attention to his latest game and using the prospect of a Dreamcast 2 to get attention, and look at how well it's working, we're all talking about him and noticing his new game that I knew nothing about 10 minutes ago.

Stop rushing Sonic-branded bullshit out the door, sit down, and make Sonic Adventure 3.
AND NO F#%$@ING NEW CHARACTERS, YOU MAY USE ONLY THOSE FROM SA2 AND BEFORE.

That wouldn't help.
It's clear that everyone that mattered in the development of the Sonic games that people love are long gone. I'd say Sega needs to put Sonic to bed permanently, but then there'd be no other fun and quirky games from Sega either.
..and that's the biggest problem with Sega -- they make mostly quirky and weird titles that only appeal to a niche segment of the gaming population. At least that's what they're doing these days, with various Sonic titles to prop everything else up. Sure you can stay alive servicing your niche (see: Atlus), but sooner or later even that cookie will crumble. Sega has all but squandered their properties -- Alex Kidd, Streets of Rage, Puyo Puyo, Kid Chameleon, etc etc. Even Nintendo is reaching all the way back in their stable and bringing Kid Icarus back to life. Sure, they're the house that Mario built, but Kirby, and Donkey Kong and Kid Icarus and Yoshi and all their other characters still get a shot too. Sega needs to stop focusing on Sonic, and realize they have a stable of great games to draw from that would bring in old and new alike. Take some of those awesome arcade only games and port them to consoles. Get people realizing why Sega is still an important name in the business, and isn't just synonymous with Sonic.
..but I'm resigned to believing it's never going to happen. It's been 11 years since their exit from the hardware side of the industry. While I'd jump up and down like a little schoolgirl to see them announce their triumphant return, it's just not realistic. They're not sitting on a pile of money like Nintendo is, and they don't have multiple divisions to fall back on to make up the slack like Microsoft and Sony do. A lot would have to change in their games business, their management, their marketing, etc to make another piece of hardware even remotely viable.

A new sega console would be amazing, but I'm afraid their glory days of the 90's are over...
At this point I'm glad that they still even exist. Going back to the 2D platform style sonic games is a good thing, but honestly to me, Sonic is the only thing left associated to Sega. They need to step it up and release some original content.
