if you don't want to cut up your console you could get a region converter such as a honey bee but they tend to be rare and expensive. you could also hack up a game genie to use as a passthrough adapter.

I'm still a bit confused about the whole hex inverter thing....is inverting the emph line absolutely required? as in, will there be no sound if I don't invert the emph line? I was hoping to avoid having to use a hex inverter chip if possible...

I gave it a whirl but I couldn't get into it. Wasn't really the fault of the game though, For some reason I just can't get into jrpgs anymore. It did have a great soundtrack. I'm glad it was released here and everyone is getting a chance to play it.
