I'd expect fighting games and shmups to be your best bet as far as a good gaming experience. Personally I just bought DoDonPachi and it is a hell of a game and there is almost no japanese. Certainly not any that gets in the way of the game.

I havn't cared much for the gba castlevanias. They were just a slightly modified Symphony of the Night. I'd rather just play SOTN instead of an officially endorsed clone. I hate those mummy bosses, seems like you just gotta whip the hell out of em and hope they die first.
Edit: Now I can beat the whole game without dying. With the possible exception of Dracula's final form that I can't beat for the life of me. At least 50 tries and no beans.
