Yeah it reads like it should only be soft brick but it will not go into recovery. I followed all the steps as far as I can tell although I've obviously done something wrong.

No worries though It hasn't been used in over a year so its no great loss although obviously annoying.

Got the SD card... updated to 9.2 and bricked the system

I'd be down with a reboot/reimagining for 7. The series doesn't make that much sense anymore.

Get it back in a mansion, new layout, puzzles and situations. New control scheme that isn't as action based as the last 3 main games but not the tank controls of the first 3.

I'm done with Mario Golf. Progress has slowed in DQ4, been playing too much Stellaris .

Still going with Stellaris. Game needs some updates and patches but its still great fun, particularly in the early game.

I would encourage you to read the guide again, it's extremely in-depth and basically fool proof. As long as you follow it step by step (and it's marked a few places where there might be a problem - I ran into one of them but cleared it up easily enough), there's next to no chance of you bricking it...
