I did it by FTPing in to my softmodded xbox. Then I burned an xboxhdm cd and installed my hard drive on to my PC. Set my dvd rom drive to boot and then follow the instuctions on http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=244043 . I first time I've done this too so it wasn't that hard.

I agree. I don't think its worth it right now to mod it. Like you said you don't have money to waste so if I was you, I would wait for the warrenty to end then go to town on it. Atleast then the 360 will be cheaper.
