It seems the creation of GTA III owes a debt to the Dreamcast, and in an alternate universe where the Dreamcast was more successful might have actually been released for Dreamcast.

Obbe Vermeij actually claims the Dreamcast could have handled GTA III and the jump to PS2 was purely commercial.

Aww shucks, now I wanna play GTA3 on the Dreamcast! That would be totally awesome.

I just checked, and it looks like GTA3 on PS2 is just under 1 GB, so a DC version could have been on a single disc.

GTA3 is truly a disaster.
