All MAMErs are gonna be playing the Japan version, right? I know there's unchangeable differences in the extends between regions.

Hot damn, you're right.

The main MAME ROM has 4 territories - Europe (Tuning license), Japan, USA (Fabtek license) and Asia.

When you first start, it defaults to Europe (Tuning license).

Extends ARE different across each territory.

Europe (Tuning license) - Every 2 million/NONE (default)
Japan - 1 million & 2 million/Every 1 million (default)
USA (Fabtek license) - Every 2 million/NONE (default)
Asia - Every 2 million/NONE (default)

So as you can see, the Japanese version gives the most options. Which are we going with?

We should be playing extends at 1mil, that is what the Saturn does.

Shmups hi-score thread for Battle Garegga has JAPAN VERSION with extend at every 1 million. Safe to say that should be the same for us.

To change territory in MAME:

1) Hit TAB key
2) Go to "Game Configuration", hit Enter
3) Use right arrow key until you see "Japan" under Region, then "Return To Previous Menu"
4) Make sure "Every 1000K" appears in the Dip Switches under "Bonus Life".
5) Hit F3 to reset.

Problem solved!

There are different options in the Saturn version, which change the game slightly:

Game Difficulty: I'm assuming 'Normal' is the same as the arcade version?
Red Ball: changes enemy bullet appearance, so I guess this should be off.
S-Option: gives each ship a special option formation, so I guess this should be off too.
Small Hit Size: On/Off, does 'On' make it smaller than the arcade version?

S-Options can be acquired through various means of power up collection in the arcade, but to have as a default would be a no no.

Small Hitbox can also be selected in arcade via ship selection, so to have as default for all ships would be a no no as well.

Unless we're gonna play version 2 of the arcade ROM, then Red Ball should be off.

Normal is default difficulty.

Mike, can we get official rulings on all this (in the OP) before we start sinking time in?

Which ROM?
Which settings?
Which settings on the Saturn?

I assume we'll be sticking with the normal ROM for MAME. I've never actually played a ROM that had the red bullets. What's the directory name of that ROM?
