"What are they saying?" Fighters Edition

Post by marurun »

As most of you probably know, the sampled voices in fighting games aren't always the highest quality or the most intelligible. This leads to some hilarious misunderstandings, especially (though certainly not exclusively) when there's a language barrier. What fighting game samples do you mis-hear? These 3 did a number on me.

Street Fighter -
"Michael!" (Fight)
Street Fighter II -
Ryu/Ken: "That's advantage!" (Tatsumaki senpuu kyaku)
Samurai Shodown -
Galford: "How's my bread?" (Plasma Blade)
Dope Pope on a Rope

Michael! is totally classic. Unmistakeable. A lot of those original Street Fighter voices are like that.

What I thought stuff sounded like on SF II:

"A Too Den" (hadouken)
"Looks like desperooyeah" (hurricane kick)
"Alec Foo" (sonic boom)
"AWWW YOU CANT!" (shoryuken)

I always wondered what the hell Raiden was saying in Mortal Kombat when he does his torpedo move. It just sounds like BARGHRGEAEGRGHAGRHGHBL

I always thought that Terry was saying "Barbeque!" when he did the Burn Knuckle on FF2 for Super Nintendo.

Dhalsim says something when he kicks you from across the screen. I had teh Sega Genesis version, and to my young ears it always sounded like Dhalsim was saying, "Tiger!"

To this day, I don't know what he was really saying.

I prefer "Thank you for the day" myself.

My younger self interpreted the Raiden move in the 1st MK as, "Are you bub-uh-lay!?"

"ALL YOU CAN!" (shoryuken)
"A dookie!" (hadouken) - just like the pic above
"Ya esta!" (Chun-Li's voice after winning a round in SF2)
and who could forget the Curly sound effect after Liu Kang's bicycle kick (MK3)?
