Re: Racketeer Weekly Fight Nights: Resurrection?

Post by dsheinem »

just a few thoughts on last night:

I fell asleep several times while waiting to play SFIV. I know the idea is to get a lot of involvement, but I don't care about watching tons of fights in between my own - especially if I don't know the folks I'm watching. A fight between noise and Mike? Sure, I'm interested. A fight between some dudes from another forum? Yawn. My .02 would be to keep it Racketboy forum-specific and limit the lobby size to 6 at most. Limit victories to one time through everyone in the lobby. If there's extra interest, someone can set up a second lobby and announce it here.

Don't know about next week, but I'm usually free any night of the week, esp if I know about it a week or so ahead of time.

Also, idgaf about looking like an ass on stream; I'll play something I've never even touched before for teh lulz.

I feel like if we keep this RB-centric, then there will barely be enough people to play with. Hell, one of the funnest parts of last night was watching noonie go back and forth with mr400m.

Man I take one little nap and look what happens, lol. Prepare for a tl;dr hoedown here folks, I'm gonna try to respond to everyone.

EvilRyu2099 wrote:Here is the thing.. People will start having busy schedules and there will be barely anyone showing up.. Also some people want to train in said game more before showing up on a live stream since there are always stream monsters critiquing. Every fight night we've had was always put on hiatus in one way or another.. It would get resurrected then put on hold again and so forth.. And you can't go wrong with SSFIV AE.. Most of the people here either play that or retro fighters already on sale, or older fighters.. Not many people here play the current stuff..

I think I understand what you are saying here... I also understand that it is simply impossible to please everyone, so I will just do my best to work within the constraints of all the suggestions and limitations present with this type of thing. I'm not doing this for anything but the fun (hopefully) of everyone involved and figuring out what this whole thing will end up being in the long run... is gonna be a process, and I expected it to be one.
It's up to each individual what they want to do with 'Weekly Fight Night'. All I am doing is taking charge of providing a time and place that will hopefully motivate enough people to want to set aside the time to participate. This was only the first one, and predictably had a lot of kinks to be worked out.

PS: No one here has BB CP except me but I am considered an anime/snk player.. I actually play on other FGC streams when I can..

Ok, as I am still new to this community, suggesting BBCP was just part of the process of feeling everyone's preferences out. I figured a lot of people here were very capable of importing games, especially fighters they like (since PS3 games are region free) and wanted to see if there was interest, hence it being a suggestion only.

Not sure where you are going with the last sentence though...?

Feel free to at least check the status of the stream when you get home (if you get home quickly after work :P ). You may be able to hop on for a few games of whatever we are on at that point.

mjmjr25 wrote:This is what i'm saying. We've done it this way on racket - didn't work multiple times. Everyone will post availability, pick the games they want, you'll be set for 3 hours of fighting with 12 different guys...and 3 people show up. One of whom is Brad who has to stop every 8 minutes to go smoke.

I mean, that is the risk we have to take. The reason I chose to invite local players with me on stream, was to add variety and have an additional element of control on rotation. In SF last night for instance, we had a rule for those of us playing in the host acct- If you win 3 matches in a row, hand the stick off to the next player. If you lost, hand the stick to the next player, in order to keep the rotation and play fresh.

The multiple games on the same night hasn't worked traditionally either.

It's yr call - you've resurrected this, i'm just trying to tell you how it's worked with this community. The best fighters in this community (the7k, sevin0seven, CD AGES, EvilRyu) have sporadic availability due to work, time zone differences, system availability, etc. The rest of us are very casual FG fans w/full-time jobs, wives, kids, alter-ego's and gambling addictions. We are probably above average fighters, but not beyond that. I'm telling you, if this is meant to be racket-centric, your best bet is to narrow down a top 10 list of games, announce the list and rotate them out every week.

Like I said to evilryu, it's gonna be a process here and finding out what will work and what won't. I'm not trying to turn this into a hyper-competitive thing either; I purposely invited intermediate players from my area to come participate. Not wanting to turn this thing into a proving ground to "show people up" or make them look ridiculously bad. I may occasionally invite some top players in Buffalo in certain games, if ever there is a call to (like if someone wants practice vs a much better opponent).
This is mean't to be racket-centeric, but if I need to start inviting players from other communities to make things interesting because interest here has waned, I am willing to do that as well. This is a thing we can grow and hopefully something that in the end can be watchable to others/randoms that happen by (I eventually will stat adding information to viewers about where players are from, what site(s) we discuss the matches on and so forth).

For now I will try to stay away from a 'hard list' of predetermined games that I will rotate regularly. It may eventually become that, but I want to keep me options open for now, and let this take shape through trial by fire. Bare in mind, this started during the busiest time of year for a lot of people, and I understand that. We may have poor turnout next few weeks and results not indicative of what it will be like a few months from now.
I'm gonna keep at this, no worries. This ain't my first rodeo when it comes to organizing FG events :) I also am not trying to come in here and act like a big shot, who knows better than everyone because I have done <insert self important titles and tasks here>. Because none of that should matter on a thing like this, other than the fact that I can prove to you guys I can keep this type of thing going and keep people positive on it (hopefully).

This is helpful, and I will take your thoughts under advisement. Last night, mr400m who went on that 20-or so-streak was an anomaly, I thought he WAS a racketboy forum member because he sent a FR on PSN right when I started calling for people here to add me. Apparently he is not, and didn't understand that it was a relaxed casual night and thanks to SF's assbackward lobby system, we were unable to enforce a hard win limit and couldn't voice chat... so in those situations, we will just kick the player if they do not respond to the in-game communication 'to let people rotate'. Though, It was fun at the end watching 2 of the "better" locals I had actually play their mains against him at the end.

We'll certainly get a feel sooner than later, on how big the lobby will be and how many wins before people rotate etc.

TSTR, you were by far the most enthusiastic and positive last night about this whole thing, and you stuck through all the boring technical difficulties we had... so kudos on that front man, you're a pretty chill dude

This is always gonna be RB-centric first and foremost, and if it happens to be a shit week for most of the 'regulars' we have, I will seek other forums to fill in some light competition for us in. I am a member of many communities and have a good feel (I think) for who'd work out in playing players of the skill-level present that night.

Again though- We shall see, as things move forward, how this all takes shape.

So yea, for now... Humor me and try to just give me days/times you all are available next week, and I will try my best to make this work.
I will eventually post up archived matches on YT or something, so everyone can catch most of the action if they missed out, or just want to watch their own matches and study what went right/wrong (a tool most invaluable to those looking for improvement).

I meant nothing by it, just that I play on various streams such as Finest KO or the Brett sometimes.. Or other people who stream from dustloop.. Not that I am great by any means, but I try to learn a little bit more about certain Fighting games I have a pique interest in.. Also I'm a scrub stream monster so there's that! I even stream as evident in my sig.. :D

Np evilryu, I wasn't offended, just confused on what point was trying to be made in context to the previous discussions.

So anyone else up for Thursday 12/26 at 830pm EST? That seems to be the most common time listed for a shitty holiday week, next week. Don't worry, I expect the turn out to be low, but that doesn't mean it can't be fun!

I've considered importing BBCP, or downloading it digitally if available. But I feel like I can wait 3 more months. Especially since I've been mainly PC and portable gaming lately.
