Favorite Beat em Ups!

Post by marlowe221 »

This sub-forum is supposed to be about both Fighters and Beat em Ups - two game genres with many similarities and many differences. But the threads in this forum seem to be mostly about Fighters; there is barely any Beat em Up discussion at all!

So, in the interests of balance, let's each list our 5 favorite Beat em Up games across all time periods and platforms.

I will start:

1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time (SNES)
2. Streets of Rage 2 (GEN)
3. River City Ransom (NES)
4. Double Dragon (Arcade)
5. Knights of the Round (SNES)

Your turn!
Have: Sega Genesis, SNES, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Atari 800XL, PC, N3DS XL, Wii U, GBA, Xbox One, Switch

Want: Games!!!

It is always a bad idea to do things like listing your top X in order. Rather, I'll just post some I really like.

Guardian Heroes (Saturn)
Double Dragon (GBA, NES) - despite the fact that these two versions are VERY different
Double Dragon 2 (NES, PCE SCD)
Double Dragon 3 (NES, but not arcade or GEN)
River City Ransom (NES, PCE SCD, GBA)
Streets of Rage (GEN)
Streets of Rage 2 (GEN)
Golden Axe (Arcade, GEN)
Rushing Beat series (SNES) - despite the fact that they're not actually very good : )
Might Final Fight (NES) - and no, I'm not a big fan of the Final Fight series in general
Dynamite Cop 2 (Arcade, DC)
Berzerk (DC)
Dope Pope on a Rope

Ooooo love topics like this, i would say:

1. TMNT IV: Turtles in Time
2. Battletoads & Double Dragon
3. The Simpsons Arcade
4. Knights of the Round
5. Final Fight

I still play Battletoads & Double Dragon at a friends house, good times. Also have the TMNT IV: Turtles in Time Reshelled for PS3, too bad Ubisoft doesnt have the Turtle license anymore otherwise people could still be downloading it.

I don't know, so many beat'em ups out there. Hard to pick just five. Two of my recent favorites though are:

The Dishwasher Vampire Smile
Simpsons Arcade (Japanese ROM on PS3)

Plus, an old favorite I've been playing again

Ninja Warriors Again (the Japanese Super Famicom version)

That's right. (or in the words of Mess.O, "THAT'S GOOD!") Capcom's are the best. I'd list them all but there would be too many.

I will recommend a good one to try on MAME

Age of Heroes: Silkroad 2

from the Korean company Unico. Nice graphics and lots of depth, moves, Engrish, and a character named Shenmue. No, seriously.

i played one of the Oriental Legend games at MAGfest. very cool. i'd like to check out the series more...

anyone know if any of those games emulate well? i know the PGM stuff is dicey on MAME but i think there have been great strides lately what with DDP2 being playable
