would the new Prey fall into this category at all, or is just straight up horror? I played a bit of the demo and it seemed quite cool.

Largely so, but it does technically have stealth that can be utilized/upgraded. Being fair though, so do things like Skyrim.

While I haven't played through all of it to say, I'd also suspect Alien Isolation to be something to consider. At the very least, if SOMA fits, then that likely more than does too.

Alien: Isolation is a great suggestion. And totally horrifying.

Prey is more on the horror end. I think there might be an ability or two that fit a more stealthy play style, but it didn't seem to utilize a system of light visibility like SS2 did (thanks to being on the Thief engine).

that was sort of the impression I got from the demo, yeah.

Not exactly on topic but I feel like I'd personally enjoy Prey a lot more than the actual stealth games being mentioned haha.

Alien Isolation is an excellent call and probably fits better than my suggestion for SOMA. It's weird how I absolutely loved Isolation but forget about it when discussing games, but I tend to think about it when we're talking the Alien movie verse haha. To me it's the best thing in the Alien series after Alien and Aliens by miles. Those developers knew Alien better than Ridley Scott himself. I like how it comes off a bit like a System Shock 3 sometimes, but Prey does as well even moreso. Prey is a good call, but to be honest I think playing stealthy would be incredibly annoying. There's a fair bit of backtracking and the weird unconventional enemy types, I just can't picture that playstyle being fun in it... I think Prey's design favors a more upfront Bioshock kind of approach or just run from enemies like you can in the System Shock's. Dishonored nudges you towards stealth/assassin, but I didn't really get that vibe with Prey and its level designs.

I feel like I do this too, but I think it's because of how absolutely unique it is. I really feel like Isolation is on its own level, and thus I don't often feel like other games remind me of it enough to bring it up in gaming conversation. Unless someone asks about games that are genuinely scary. Then I think of it.

Wow! We have some great recommendations. So we have Aliens game where it's not like Colonial Marines thankfully.

Next up is the Chronicles of Riddick game and that's two games in one. With that one unfortunately the only place where I see you can purchase it is through Amazon digitally. I'll chalk it up to a licensing issue for the reason why it's not on a traditional venue like Steam.

A friend of mine raved a while back about Vampire: Bloodlines so I'll look into that as well.

Prey was on my list because it reminded me of BioShock. So I appreciate you guys mentioning it to remind me to pick it up eventually.

Xeo: I wouldn't mind looking into the first set of Thief games. I played through the original Deus Ex games so why not give Thief a try.

I appreciate the recommendation guys I have a list that I'm going to tackle in the next steam sale.

One last thing I wanted to mention is that I thought about other games that might fit, maybe loosely, of what I was looking for. This might be stretching but Far Cry 3, Blood Dragon, Far Cry 4, and most likely the next one coming up had a pretty decent stealth system in place and a decent collection of silenced weapons that you can use to take out those outposts. I had a lot of fun taking out those outpost, acting all predator like with silenced sniper rifles and the bow. Just wanted to add that in here.

The first four are worth playing. Chaos Theory and Double Agent (with the good/bad objective choices) were the best.

Xeogred wrote:I will second the Riddick recommendations. Dark Athena comes with a full remake of Butcher Bay, they're both awesome and definitely have a strong emphasis on stealth/melee. And don't let this being a licensed thing fool you, the story/characters in these games are way better than the movies and pretty damn good. Riddick is actually a pretty cool and compelling character. Top notch stuff.

I had a surprisingly good time with Butcher Bay, except for that section where you get inside the mech that had me lost for about an hour. Story's great.
