I'm probably one of the worst people to talk about how "hard" these games are

Now those flipped controls stages....

lmao dude, put me on the spot. I've been meaning to make a post about my update... I've cleared 4 of the worlds (still need to take down the waterfall boss), but yeah I kind of stalled.

I seriously can't remember the last time I beat DKC3 though and I was having fun, I do plan to get back to it! I'll try to get some in today.

Yeah those two screenshots you posted... those are like my least favorite environments in the series. lol, they look so dorky! Like the Kong's were shrunk and put into some kiddy playground. I hate the elephant too.

I do remember the last few worlds being really cool and difficult though, so looking forward to it.

The bonus stages have been easier to find and manage in this one compared to DKC2 to me, so I may get through the bonus world too.

I'm REALLY not looking forward to going for a 102% completion rating on my next playthrough of DKC2. Last time I did that was on the GBA back in 2005 and...god damn those leaps of faith for the DK Koins. At least in DKC3 they also come with a puzzle to solve :D. (I really enjoy that aspect of DKC3 over DKC2, getting the DK Koins).

I've been thinking and daydreaming about DKC3 the past week or so; one of those things when deciding what game to play a certain one keeps popping up in your head. I've been avoiding it because I would have finished all three in recent years with no more to play, though I guess there is still (kind of) Tropical Freeze on WiiU.

Fine, because of you guys I'll give it a go. I played it when it first came out but never finished it. It is indeed awesome, but back then I stopped playing because I wasn't as impressed with it as I was with DKC2. I can appreciate everything about it more today, though.

About 102 percent in DKC2: The DK coins you can take it or leave it; it has no real effect on the gameplay; just something extra to do if you want to keep exploring the levels. I will suggest you collect enough kremkoins to unlock the "secret" levels in the Lost World, which are pretty awesome. One is even a unique jungle level in terms of background art, music and an enemy not found elsewhere.

Check out the Donkey Kong Country games on GBA for replays. There are some differences there like extra mini-games, sub-games and new gameplay modes. Then check out the Dong Kong Land trilogy on Game Boy. They were thankfully also developed by Rare. All of the level designs in those Land games are unique and totally different than the Country ones. If you can deal with the black and white graphics you'll have a fun time. (Although Donkey Kong Land III got a Game Boy Color version, but it's Japan-only.)

My problem with both the bonus stages and DK coins in both DKC2/DKC3, is when they start becoming one-shot deals. If you mess up once, you have to replay the whole level to try again and hope you get it that time. Gets kind of tedious.

It's not that bad though, in my latest replays I've been kind of surprised how fast I've blown through entire worlds when I sit down and play some, while collecting tons of bonus and DK coins while not really going out of my way for them. I just wish they did something different with the bonus coins because I love the Lost World's in both DKC2/DKC3, but I haven't felt the need to be a completionist with these in forever and just don't want to go digging around for the secrets. /lazy

All the more reason why I still like DKC1 the most since it doesn't have this, and I think some of the worlds have more levels per world. It's just straight to the point awesome. My only complaint here is the difficulty, it's insanely easy compared to the sequels (and the Returns games especially)... but you can't always win I guess.

IDK, I had DKC1 for GBA and wasn't a fan of the downgrade in graphics/music. It does have some nice extras though.

If you REALLY want a challenge in DKC2, and perhaps start the levels over from the beginning more often, try the 'no DK barrels' hard mode cheat:
Hard Mode (No Barrels): B, A, Right, Right, A, Left, A, X

The GBA ports look horrifying! The graphics... the music... and I bet the controls are awkward. I've never had any interest whatsoever in trying those haha.

Might have to look into the Donkey Kong Land's though, if they're kind of a Megaman Xtreme case?

Just played a ton of DKC3 again, up to the final world. I completely forgot about the boss to the 6th world, the weird fish one. These last two worlds are definitely feeling pretty alien to me, all I could remember was that world 6 had a lot of cool mountain stages, and world 7 had some unique jungle level and more cool caves. I love the caves, water stages, waterfall stages, and the mountain stages a lot in this one. DKC2 has tons of awesome levels, outside of the thorny branch levels though I'd say DKC1 and DKC3 have some cooler standout environments to me, even though I think DKC3 is a mixed bag... when it's good though, it's amazing. I think I probably just have a preference for the tropical exotic levels, and DKC2 didn't really have those at all.

One more time I will suggest checking out the Donkey Kong Land games on Game Boy. Yes the graphics are nowhere near as good, but the gameplay is still up to par. These were developed by RARE. They are entirely different games in layout and level design than their Country versions.

DKC3 beat! Is Koolerstein(?) officially not K Rool and is his cousin/brother/twin or something? haha.

I'd say DKC2 has the best final boss fight for sure. But I really liked how different DKC3's bosses were in general.
