640x480 PC 2D platformers?
640x480 PC 2D platformers?
There's something remarkably beautiful about this "higher-res" 2D artwork from the late 90s for PC that I love, in games like Diablo, RollerCoaster Tycoon, Fallout, etc. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find many 2D platformers that utilize this resolution natively. So far all I know of is Claw and Jazz Jackrabbit 2. Anyone know of any more?
Why?: I have a 4:3 CRT monitor that isn't quite right for these newer 1080p widescreen Indie games (plus an underpowered computer by today's standards), yet I also find the 320x240 DOS games and the like too "blocky" when it's scaled up, compared to say them being displayed natively on a 15khz display. These 640x480 games just look amazing however.

Re: 640x480 PC 2D platformers?
It's hard to think of any, since platformers were just never really a popular genre on PC. I'd imagine Rayman would support 640x480...
I'm still not sure whether I'm a kid or a squid now.

GOG's version does support it.

I use a 4:3 CRT VGA myself. As in TV broadcast, the PC is still in the transition stage of widescreen support. Camera JPGs and many games look better unstretched in their native 4:3 format.
My pick would be Earthworm Jim 2. Come to think about it, The DOS versionI think is in a lower resolution and still looks great in a non stretched VGA CRT.

I was just going to suggest Rayman. I guess others beat me to it.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input a lot! I actually love Rayman, ever since it came out. Awe-inspiring game with an amazing art-style, especially for the time!
I have to say though that all the games mentioned are doubled or tripled in resolution from 320x240/320x200 when put to full screen though, which would be basically any platformer from the early to mid 90's on any console or computer system. Basically this: http://static.gog.com/upload/images/201 ... 46146e.jpg versus the original http://www.raymanpc.com/wiki/script-en/ ... onster.png
There doesn't seem to be any platformers that were made with 640x480+ resolution in mind that isn't modern; ah well!
I did find out about the Another World Anniversary edition on GOG though through this search, and wow, the visual update is amazing, all done by Chahi himself.

No idea about the resolution, but Jazz Jackrabbit 2 was always a favourite of mine.

Claw, a 1997 platformer.

I tried it out and it doesn't seem to run on XP. Do you know of a fix by any chance?

A few sonic and mega man games were ported to pc. You could look into Sonic and knuckles collection or Sonic CD. I would recommend getting the steam versions of those games.
