Funnest character ability to use in a 2d sidescroller?

Post by shadobeni »

What are some of the funnest character abilities you've used in a 2d sidescroller?

Bonus points for something that has not been copied a bazillion times over by other games. The game itself doesn't necessarly have to be good or fully take advantage of it either.

Rocket boosting in the Sparkster/Rocket Knight Adventures

I haven't played the games a lot but I really have a blast using the rocket to bounce off walls. I like it for its versatility since it can be used for attacking too. Although RKA2 isn't considered the best in the series I think the way the rocket boosting works there is better than the other games. It automatically charges on its own and you can boost multiple times in the air which you couldn't do in its predecessors. As far as I know this ability is unique and hasn't been copied in other games.

Bionic arm swinging in Bionic Commando

Actually I've never played this game but moving from platform to platform using what is essentially a grappling hook looks pretty fun.

Rocket boots double jump in Vectorman

I don't know which game was the first to introduce the double jump but I like the version in the Vectorman games because you can use it to attack too.

Surprised no ones gone with my old favorite: Scrooge Mcduck's pogo cane, from the NES classic Ducktales.

I can only think of some funny moves in 3D platformers. Most attacks in Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie look pretty funny.
