Re: Visual advantage of CRT monitors vs 4:3 LCD for Classic

I'd say if you're running in actual DOS, then a CRT is worthwhile if you're playing games that did overscan tricks. If you're on a modern PC with Dosbox then just pick the appropriate renderer settings and use a modern monitor.

Which games use Overscan tricks by the way?

Nobody mentioned that "4:3" LCDs are not actually 4:3? They are 5:4.

It's been a while since I've used a non-widescreen computer monitor, but yes, I remember when I first switched from a CRT monitor to a "4:3" LCD and found that to be most annoying.

Played a lot of NEStopia on my old 19 inch. I believe i used the full screen res of 1280x960 to make it look like 4:3. Little black bars on the top and bottom :P

Depends on the native resolution. 1280x1024, sure. 1024x768 or 1600x1200 are 4:3. I think most just use 4:3 to differentiate from widescreen formats. Many earlier widescreen LCDs were, as your graphic points out, 16:10 (1680x1050, 1920x1200), or there are other variants... I think it's more that TVs would be 4:3 or 16:9, /shrug
