Which of these expensive games is worth the money?

by 8bit Wed Jun 11, 2014 10:46 am

I've been eyeing a lot of valuable titles recently after receiving a nice size bonus at work and it has got me thinking... which of these games are truly worth their price tag and which ones are just overhyped or just too expensive for the experience they provide? The goal wouldn't be to just collect them but to really give whatever I purchase a full play through.

Below are some of the games I'm considering. I think they are all supposed to be good games based on what I've read but I've never played any of them myself. Which ones do you think I should go after first or skip?

NES
Metal Storm ~$50
Mega Man 5 ~$75
Duck Tales 2 ~$90

SNES
Harvest Moon ~$130
Breath of Fire 2 ~$50
Lufia 2 ~$55
Dracula X ~$140

Gamecube
Gotcha Force ~$90
Cubivore ~$80

PS1
Valkyrie Profile ~$80
Tales of Destiny 1 and 2 ~$80 each

PS2
Rule of Roses ~$100

Genesis
Castlevania Bloodlines (CIB) ~$50
MUSHA (CIB) ~ $200

Sega CD
Snatcher ~$200

Saturn
Battle Garegga ~$150

Dreamcast
Cannon Spike ~$80
Border Down ~$130

First off, no way I would pay any of those prices.

Hunt around the local stores, look for some cheap auctions. I got Lufia II a few months ago for <$30.

As far as quality goes, I really enjoyed Breath of Fire II. Great RPG and much better than the first game.

I would say at least try them out with an emulator before dropping any cash on them. Be sure you are going to like the game before dropping $50+ on it.

If you are truly measuring gameplay experience against the going price- Rule of Rose and Harvest Moon certainly aren't worth it, imo.

Both offer experiences that were done better in other cheaper games (RR= Silent Hill/Haunting Ground/Bully, HM= farmville meets jrpg lite). Rule of Rose is had a lower print run that most games and had controversy over implied sexual connotations with underaged female characters.
I've also never seen Rule of Rose selling at $100 at game stores, that is way high, no one should ever pay that. I see ebay completed listings all over the place for it from $75-$140, no idea what is going on there... but it's likely a lot of shill bidding or just plain idiots.

depends on what kind of gaming experience you're going for, but if you're gonna splurge on something on that list, i'd get snatcher. great game.

Those prices seem really high but here are my thoughts:

Castlevania Bloodlines is, in my opinion, the best classic Castlevania and it's not really anymore expensive than SCIV is. If you have played the original and liked it, it's probably the best choice.

Battle Garegga is a great game but it has a mortal flaw: Bullets blend with the backgrounds. The Saturn versions mittigates this somewhat and it's the only port of the game. Still, if you aren't really into shooters, I wouldn't buy it because it's a game for fans.

You could probably make a case for Cannon Spike or Border Down too, if you are a really big shmup fan, but I don't think any of the other games are really that interesting to own and before I spent so much money on those two shmups, there are a dozen I would buy first.

On another note Valkyrie Profile has a really good port/remake on the PSP that can easily be found for under $10 used. That is if you are just interested in playing it.

Here are the games I would pick for each system.

If you are choosing only one, then I would go with Metal Storm, Lufia II, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Cannon Spike, or - if you must splurge - Snatcher.

I hope that helps.

Of course, that's the one with the least amount of replay value...

I disagree with Harvest Moon SNES not being worth the money (then again, I wouldn't pay that much for it either) but for my money, it's the best in the series. Dracula X, for all I've heard, is nearly impossible to beat, and is full of cheapness and frustration (a must for collectors, not so much for someone wanting to enjoy the game). Avoid Rule of Rose.

I recommend Valkyrie Profile on the PS1 - awesome, awesome story, characters, and lots of replayability.

Dracula X is a must for collectors, but it is far easier than either Castlevania or Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse.
