4K UHD TVs under $1000 on Amazon today...

by cha cha Mon Dec 02, 2013 5:36 pm

From the wonderful household brand of Seiki...

Amazon has the cheapest 4K displays EVER (Seiki brand) today:

$770 @ 50" - http://www.amazon.com/Seiki-Digital-SE5 ... 00BXF7I9M/
$480 @ 39" - http://www.amazon.com/Seiki-Digital-SE3 ... 00DOPGO2G/

Well the only little buried blurb any gamer is gonna care about= has "up to 64ms of lag", which is objectively awful. Like, super bad for any kind of gaming.

I kind of like the 39" Seiki for a big form factor high res PC monitor though. OBVIOUSLY not for gaming (who has the PC hp that could run a game at UHD anyways? and lots of lag is a total deal breaker for me to begin with), but for general web, data compiling, video / photo editing, etc. Could be useful. Movies also would be pretty amazing once they, you know... MAKE UHD movies?

Thoughts?
(my thoughts are too soon, models available too unproven, but price point is compelling for taking the risk of giving it a test drive.)

I got to play with the 39inch version a while ago and was not impressed. Sure it has a lot of power under the hood, but like you said UHD is just not here yet.

Hometheater.com, which is now soundandvision.com did a review on the Seiki 4K TV that released earlier this year or late last year and said it was basically garbage. They said 4K stuff looked decent at best and that anything under 4K looked absolutely terrible. I would wait until a real 4K TV is more affordable.

EDIT: I can't seem to find the review in question, but did a google search and all of the reviews of the set show how crappy this set is.

It's waaaay too early to try and buy affordable 4K sets and expect them to be of any real quality.

If you're that excited about the tech and want to be an early adopter, just fork out the $5,000 and get one of the Sony ones or something.

The rest of us are likely best off waiting until there's actually some media that takes advantage of it and the prices become more affordable across the board. We're still several years off from that right now.

Is there any point of 4k tvs aside from computer monitors where you sit a foot away from the screen? Can you really notice a difference sitting at a normal distance between a 1080p and a 4k tv?

Depends on the size of the display and what you consider a normal viewing distance. I would also note that I often sit closer to a TV while gaming. Though that wouldn't really matter for consoles since even the PS4 and Xbox One are lucky to hit 1080p60

Not even close. Take the 39" screen. That's 39" at 3840 × 2160. 113 ppi.

A 'retina' iPad has a 9.7" display at 2048 x 1536. That is 264 ppi. More than double the ppi.

And there are plenty of phones and tablets with higher ppi now. But when you consider how much further away you will your eyes will be from the 39" TV compared to the 9.7" tablet, 4k is pretty damn good.

Yeah you aren't going to be holding a TV that close to your face. That'd be weird.
