I've always had a fondness for the opening theme song from the Silver Surfer NES game. It had the catchy, sort of epic rock-dance beat as the notes progressed down the scale and then back up again. I haven't heard it in years, but I can still hear it in my head. Such a unique game too - basically a space shooter skinned as a Silver Surfer game.

That was Tim Follin, wasn't it? He's the great Euro Arp-Master.

Update: I'm currently having a look at chip music in PS1 games though not at the crazy fast pace I did for previous systems.

I'm also checking out early redbook soundtracks and adding them to the yearly lists, below the chiptune lists (scroll down).

With the PS1 and Saturn you have to be really careful, because a lot of them also used streaming soundtracks that aren't redbook audio but also aren't generated by the internal audio chips. Those mostly sound like redbook but are slightly lower quality. Stuff like SotN is streaming, whereas Tactics Ogre is chip.

Yeah it's definitely more of a hassle than the previous gen (besides PC). I've documented nearly every Saturn game's audio formats via debugging tools in emulation, though it is just at a first impressions level at this point and ripped OSTs are sometimes not complete (having just one type of file when if you have a look at the game itself, it actually uses other formats for stuff like jingles or cutscenes), so those need a second look too. If I knew how to code I could possibly set up some routine to quickly check a game's disc for each format.

Some games had quite nice streaming quality using two channels to play the files back in stereo, such as Silhouette Mirage.

That's cool. Have you found a way to assess the quality of the streaming playback or do you just go by your ears?

If you mean the sample rate, there's no sample ripping tool afaik (you can rip via ssf files in winamp by exporting the playback output to wav but they'll have the same sample rate). In a build of SSF called SSF test ver. 2018 12 17, you can see the frequency of each note displayed in real-time in the channel display on a separate window, and I suppose that gives some idea of the quality (lower frequency=lower pitch but I think a higher note with a low quality sample would still show a low number) but you can't mute channels in this display and they tend to switch on and off rapidly in more complex tracks. Quality seems to vary within each track. Of course that basically just accounts for playback clarity and a track can have bad samples playing at a high sample rate.

An example from Radiant Silvergun during the less busy part with the horns in the level 1 song:

With streaming audio it's a constant number, 22khz per channel for Silhouette Mirage for example which IIRC is the highest.

Edit: No I guess it's 44.1 khz, checked out Clockwork Knight which uses that.

Yeah, I was talking about the streaming audio. I'm not familiar with the bit rates and whatnot and how most streaming audio in the PS1 or Saturn compares quality-wise to redbook.
