So which games did Yu Suzuki make?

Post by Erik_Twice »

As you might know, Yu Suzuki is my favourite designer of all time, beating Sid Meier and the guys at Valve by a wide margin. And I kind of want to play all the games he made, but knowing which ones he actually had a hand on is not as easy as it seems.

I went started with the Wikipedia list and purged all the games that weren't of his design, like Turbo OutRun or Virtua Fighter 3.

Champion Boxing
Champion Pro Wrestling
Space Harrier
Hang-On
Super Hang-On
Out Run
Enduro Racer
After Burner/After Burner II
Power Drift
G-LOC: Air Battle
Virtua Racing
Virtua Fighter
Virtua Fighter II
Ferrari F355 Challenge
Shenmue
Shenmue II
Propeller Arena
OutRun 2
Psy-Phi (Cancelled)
Shenmue City
Gan! Gan! Pirates

I'm not sure about these three games, the first two are listed in Wikipedia but that's it:

Sword of Vermilion (This one was made by AM2 and has music by the OutRun guy, but Suzuki isn't credited according to Mobygames, so probably he wasn't involved).

Now we get to the murky part: Was he involved in the following games as a designer?

Virtua Cop 1/2 (Wikipedia lists him only as producer)
Virtua Fighter 4/VF4 Evo (Listed as executive producer, like in Propeller Arena)
Virtua Cop 3 (Listed as Executive producer)

Daytona USA (I do not think he was involved, but some websites do credit him instead of Toshihiro Nagoshi, which opens a new can of worms because I have seen him both credited as "Special Thanks" and "Designer", which is weird.

Let's do this :)

EDIT: What about Propeller Arena, is that one of his games too?

Super Hang-On, though it's just me being nitpicky since you have Hang-On already listed.
Sonic the Fighters was produced by Yu Suzuki!
Race TV, supposedly his last game with AM2..

I wonder how many games in the Sega Arcade cabinet realm were of his creation.

Yu was so clever he predicted the day would come that somebody asked this question.

but that is only 5 of the games. One of the best (kept secrets) games on the Dreamcast.
Great thread.

You are going to have trouble playing Shenmue City. It was a cellphone game that got shutdown a couple years ago.

Champion Boxing was Yu Suzuki's first video game and Champion Pro Wrestling was its follow up.

There's a pretty good interview with him in the Ghosts 'N Goblins episode of Game Center CX where he talks about Champion Boxing and also some other interesting things like how the Japanese originally reacted to the Hang-On arcade machine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAFYdVp_Aic Interview segment starts at 9:11.

Oh, no, you are not being picky, I really thought Super Hang On was made by someone else (Like Turbo OutRun).

Race TV, supposedly his last game with AM2.

Did he produce it or design it?

Damn, now how can I find that book and learn enough Japanese to read it?

Hey, that's a very nice link! Suzuki always seems to have an audience or a bussiness idea when he makes games, which I think it's pretty cool.

Indeed. I'm also going to add Psy-Fi, which must still exist because it got to location tests and later recalled, perhaps it will resurface one day...

Suzuki designed Race TV.

Looks pretty faithful to similar games he made.
