Having just read it a month ago, I'd suggest starting with Extra Lives. It's more about modern gaming and goes into the author's personal life quite a bit, but some of the ideas expressed about game and story development are phenomenal. Definitely do this one sometime soon.
I am so tempted to throw my vote in for Mechner, but I read the book already! I feel like I can't vote for it. I kinda want to go with something new to me.
I started reading Extra Lives a while ago, but something put me off. I can't remember what, though. If it's chosen, this would be a good incentive to try again.
I think I'm going with The Future was Here. I don't know anything about Commodore computers and would love to remedy this sad fact.

I voted for the Amiga book, reading about old hardware and why it was good or how things worked seems really fun to me, more than essays about the medium, which I'm wary of.
