The good news: It's Kirby! The bad news... wait, is another Kirby bad news? I don't think so!

Seriously, though, if you didn't like Kirby games in the mainline series, and in particular, Return to Dreamland and Triple Deluxe, you won't like this one. On the flip side, if you love mainline Kirby games like I do, this is a great one. My total time to get all cubes and mess around with the 3D mode and about five minutes of Meta Knightmare mode was 9h03m. So about the same as Triple Deluxe. If you're going for a complete sticker set, it will take a bit longer. I ended up missing ten of the rare ones along the way. It's pretty much the same as before with Triple Deluxe and its keychains.

The game looks nice, and the 3D use is once again spectacularly well done. Seriously, you can play without 3D, but there's enough use of background and foreground, and attacks that come from there, that it really helps you parse the screen better with 3D enabled. Soundtrack is the usual stuff.

The mech suit is great. Granted, it controls a lot like Kirby, but it is also significantly more powerful. It's a much cooler way to make you overpowered that doesn't feel quite as "on rails" as prior games. The mech suit even gets used in some puzzles. Sadly, it's not nearly as complex as it used to be to unlock everything. I remember Kirby's Adventure requiring some very deft maneuvering to hang on to a power to unlock the secret area in stages. This time, the power you need is usually just either right there or very close by.

There are also some shooter sequences, and some ramp/racing sequences. They both serve to break up the action well. And while I won't spoil it, the final battle shooting sequence is pretty great!

There are some minor performance quirks, as the framerate tends to drop in certain areas. It's not game-breaking, but it does make me wonder if it runs better on a New 3DS. I also don't remember the performance in Triple Deluxe, so it might not be that different. Pretty sure it's the exact same engine, regardless.

Anyway, definitely got my money's worth, although ten-ish hours of content might be a bit steep for $40 if you're not absolutely desperate for a new Kirby game right now. I should also note that I found myself having more fun when I paced myself, playing a stage or two before bed. Gave me more time to savor it. ;)

It's really weird to me how fast Nintendo pumps out Kirby games, but I haven't really cared since the NES and SNES ones.

I'll consider Return to Dreamland and Triple Deluxe sometime and might get some of the Wii/U ones.

Hmm... it's been two years since Triple Deluxe, and for a game based on the same engine, that seems about right. There's only a few in the series that I don't particularly care for. Actually, only one: Kirby's Dream Land 3. And even that one is pretty solid.

Also, be aware the Wii U one is like Canvas Curse on DS, not a traditional Kirby platformer. Of course, a lot of folks prefer the oddball games to the main series.

Kirby 64 is phenomenal. One of the best in the series. One of the best 5th gen platformers as well (not that the competition was fierce that gen............).

Oh, yeah, I loved the combining powers mechanic. A lot of people didn't like it, but I loved it.

It also still seems pretty mind-blowing that we never got a proper Gamecube entry. Just Air Ride. :(

Don't Look Back is a short action-platformer/game design experiment by Terry Cavanagh that is loosely based on the myth of Orpheus. It is available for free in the App Store, and you can beat it in about 20 minutes. It is fun while it lasts, and anyone looking to explore Terry Cavanagh's work should give it a shot.

Finding Teddy is an excellent adventure game that plays very similarly to Loom. (That is, there are a lot of music-based puzzles...which are quite difficult for tone-deaf people like me. ) The pixel-art, which reminded me of Fez, is gorgeous; the puzzles present just the right amount of challenge; the game is full of secrets; it is almost completely dialogue-free; it has a simple, melancholy story; and you can beat it only takes 1-2 hours to complete the game. (Basically, it is the complete opposite of Broken Sword.) I enjoyed it so much that I played through it twice, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. (Also, it is only $0.99 in the App Store; so, anyone curious about it should give it a shot.)

Interestingly, its sequel - Finding Teddy 2 a/k/a Chronicles of Teddy: Harmony of Exidis - is a "metroidvania" game that jettisons all of the original's adventure elements. It is supposed to be pretty awesome, and I plan on picking it up and playing through it with my children (who loved Finding Teddy) as soon as I beat Shantae & The Pirate's Curse.

Finding Teddy!

Haven't played it yet but I just got it on Steam. Turned it on just to make sure it ran okay and chuckled at the intro where the giant spider emerges to grab the teddy bear.

I'll get to it someday........

Speaking of which (and I'm not trying to tease you about not having Steam) I think you'd really like this game:
