Games Beaten 2016
Re: Games Beaten 2016
Crap, I didn't mean to potentially spoil anything about RE4 there. Sorry.
People seem to like Revelations around here but I hated it. lol, boring location, water sections, awful new side characters (Jessica Sherawat and the bros who called each other dick names and such), dumb over the top global crisis plot, combat is a major downgrade from RE4-6 with no power behind hit detection, can't recall a single music track, etc. I don't get it. lol
So for Revelations to be the entry that finally brings Chris and Jill together again, briefly, was underwhelming for me to say the least.

Metal Slug 3
Pretty similar to Metal Slug 2 or X, but takes the alien stuff and goes super crazy with it. The last level in particular took me a bit by surprise on how crazy it went. I kind of like that. I wasn't particularly a fan of the aliens/supernatural stuff that was added in 2 & X, but I like it when a game knows it's silly and goes as crazy as it can possibly go.
However, I didn't really like the new water and side-scrolling flying stages. It made it a lot more difficult for me to kill stuff below me. Also I felt like some of the zombies in the final level were an incredible pain in the ass to kill. I still enjoyed it overall, but I did find those things a bit annoying.
Earth Defence Force: Insect Armageddon
I'm not exactly sure how Insect Armageddon compares to other Earth Defence Force games, as this is the first game I've played in the series, but I can say that it's not exactly a very deep game. Not being deep is fine though, since what is there is not too bad.
Basically, there are giant bugs (plus robots and spiders), and your squad needs to kill them. There really isn't any story being told, and the objectives only consist of moving to certain points and defeating all the enemies. Very simple. You can choose what armour (aka class) to play as and two weapons to use, but that's pretty much it. It does feel a little repetitive, as there aren't too many different enemies, but there aren't many stages either so I didn't mind. Plus the number of enemies that you would have to deal with at one time really made it tense at times. Well, that could just be me since I'm bad at shooters
As far as bad things go, other than it getting a bit repetitive, the AI is pretty bad. It's not broken thankfully, but your two AI partners can be pretty stupid. If the enemies aren't bosses, they're not too bad. They shoot them and actually kill quite a bit (at least on Normal). For some of the bosses however, they can die pretty easily. Like how one of the bosses will do an energy blast around them, which does quite a bit of damage. I found it best to just shoot from afar, but the AI didn't quite get the picture. Also one time, I was happily shooting bugs in a turret thing when one of my partners decided to run me over with a tank, destroying my turret in the process. Right afterwards, the same partner squashed me with a tank Luckily the partners will revive you and each other pretty well, but it was still pretty silly.
Maybe it would be better playing with other people, but despite the flaws, I still had a good time with it.

I can sure get behind the stage 1 them music, but I thought most of the rest was fairly forgettable.
Sega even covered it in a Hatsune Miku game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxHBFbqgVvs

I still love Quartet to this day though. It's such a great co-op game. I love the music and all the weird little aliens. Honestly I think the SMS version trumps the arcade version.
Most of them end up being pretty easy to find in the end. The only really tricky one was on stage 4 where you have to kill a certain set of enemies in order to make the star appear somewhere else on the map.

But the dumb plots are part of what make Resident Evil Resident Evil ! That's part of the fun of RE for me: That the plot is dumb but acted very seriously and shouldn't be thought about too hard.
My favorite quote about RE's plot has to be: "There's no way it was 'all according to Wesker's plan' to get his lung perforated by the Tyrant." In regards to the first game

Re: Games Beaten 2016
Games Ex has beaten in 2016:
92. Lost Kingdoms II|GameCube|2003|action-RPG|7h 1m|8/10
A young woman with a mysterious past must use her sacred rune stone to uncover her history and save a kingdom. To do so, she will need to recruit the aid of hundreds of different monsters fused into cards. Yes, Lost Kingdoms II continues the action-RPG/dungeon crawler/collectable card game hybridization of its predecessor. While the learning curve may be higher than typical games of this genre due to the CCG aspect, the strategic advantage and variety of battle tactics is worth the effort. Lost Kingdoms II, like Lost Kingdoms before it, is a very unique experience and a joy. Figuring out which monsters to summon, and in which combinations, is a fun game in and of itself.
Lost Kingdoms II's key evolution over the first Lost Kingdoms, is that battles now happen on the main map, rather than on a separate battle screen. This keeps the pace more fluid, and aids in immersion. It also means the player can run away from battles now if need be, lowering the difficulty significantly. Lost Kingdoms II is overall a far easier game than the original Lost Kingdoms, but it's no less fun or interesting despite the decreased challenge. Actually after you beat the game, the Proving Grounds area opens up. The Proving Grounds is a huge dungeon that is focused on being far more difficult than the main game. So you can find your challenge fix there.
Graphics have improved marginally, but cutscenes and voice acting improved dramatically. However, the OST is a step down from the first Lost Kingdoms, as is the loss of atmospheric dread. Lost Kingdoms II is simply a more cheery, less moody experience than the original. Lost Kingdoms II does however boost up the puzzle aspect, utilizing key cards for solving those in entertaining ways. One of the most interesting additions is the ability to morph in actual monsters yourself, and use the monster's ability to access areas you previously could not before.
FromSoftware crafted addictive and compelling adventures in both Lost Kingdoms. These are short plays for their genre, and would be an excellent experience played back to back. If you're looking for overwrought exposition, cheesy melodrama, and padded length, you won't find that stuff in Lost Kingdoms II. The focus here is on actual gameplay and interactivity. Thus RPG lovers with a GameCube would be foolish to pass up Lost Kingdoms II, as well as its predecessor. If you want a fast paced dungeon crawler with a collectable cards twist, you'll find yourself gleefully lost in this kingdom in no time.

Re: Games Beaten 2016
Sadly, I lost track of my list for the year and did not keep it up to date.
Just got done with Silent Hill 3. I am sure it has been reviewed to death so I will not say a whole lot about it. The game is great and it adds to part one nicely. I felt it was more run oriented than part two and maybe even a little more than part one. There was a lot more reading involved with this game. It added to the story and kept me from sitting through longer voiced dialog. The only real complaint I had was the pacing of the cut scene at the end. Seemed like everyone went into slow motion. It caused it to drag a little, but that is only a really minor complaint.
They may never recapture what these games brought to the table. Seems like when they try a game always turns into a shooter. Alan Wake, Evil Within and others seem to start well, then turn into a shooter. Other games are just jump scare after jump scare, no real immersion of story or truly horrific imagery. Maybe I am old and set in my ways LOL
If you guys have not played Silent Hill, you need to try them. I think most of them have easy modes and maybe beginner modes. Puzzle answers are all over the internet and I am sure there are plenty of walkthroughs. With September a few days away and October looming it is a perfect time to play these games in a truly dark room and surround sound if you have it. Let yourself drift into the game and just enjoy the experience.

First 50:
51. Akumajō Dracula (Famicom Disk System)
52. Castlevania (NES)
53. Classic NES Series: Castlevania (Game Boy Advance)
54. Guardian Heroes (Xbox Live Arcade)
55. Metal Slug (Neo Geo MVS)
56. Metal Slug 2 (Neo Geo MVS)
57. Metal Slug 3 (Neo Geo MVS)
58. Soul of Darkness (DSiWare)
59. Code of Princess (3DS)
60. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
61. Super Mario Land (Game Boy)
For some reason I have beaten Code of Princess three times since it launched.
It's an alright game. Though it superficially resembles Guardian Heroes it's ten times longer and about one hundred times easier. I wish combat was a bit more nuanced and less button-mashy. Nevertheless, it was the perfect game to play during Olympics commercial breaks.
As for the Mario games..... They were once again requests by my eldest. Brilliant platformers, as well all know. Is World next? We'll see.
Sorry for the lazy short write-ups lately. Having a toddler + a babby has reduced my "free time" to near zero and when I do get some I'm flat-out exhausted.

Use your typing skills to defeat zombies mutants! Such an odd concept, but it's pretty fun. It's made to be pretty cheesy, with cliche characters and a silly sounding narrator. A lot of the things you need to type can be pretty silly too. Sometimes they're just normal words, but sometimes they're things like "free hugs" and "thanks Obama". It's kind of funny, and I just really like playing a silly game from time to time.
And there really isn't much more to it than that. There is a plot, but it's not much more than kill the zombies and stop the bad guy. There was also some odd clipping from time to time and it crashed on me once, but that didn't impede on my fun too much (even if that crash was pretty irritating).
It does make me want to play the Dreamcast game though. Don't exactly have a Dreamcast keyboard though so that will have to wait a while ha.
