Snickerd00dle's Summer Challenge 2012 - how is it going?

Post by dsheinem »

Snickerd00dle may no longer be an active poster, but for the past two years he has brought an absolutely enjoyable event to the forum: the Summer Challenge. Since he seems to be in abstentia, I will go ahead and get the ball rolling for this year...

Snickerd00dle described it initially as:

what I thought I would do is pick ten games that I own and have never beat, that are regarded as classics by most people and are also games that I really wish I had played through, games everyone talks about that I never ended up finishing, and beat all ten of them by the end of the summer.

So that's the basic gist. Your own subjective definition of "Summer" (May-August, June-September, etc.) is fine...just mark an end date and shoot for it!

So what game are you ashamed to admit you've never beat? What titles have been sitting on your shelf for a long time that you know you should play? Put them on your list of 10! The goal is to give all of your picks - each of which should be regarded as at least a minor classic - the 'ol college try. You may find that you do indeed hate that "classic" with a passion, but at least now you'll have experience to back up that claim! The challenge gets even more enjoyable when multiple people play the same game, so consider adding to/modifying your list before you actually get started.

Here's my own tentative list, which may change as I see people add things to their own. I plan to get started in about a week.

1. Capcom vs SNK 2 EO
2. Super Metroid
3. Diablo II (played about 1/4)
4. Steel Battalion
5. Star Fox (played about 3/4)
6. Time Crisis (played about 2/3)
7. Sly Cooper (played about 1/4)
8. Panzer Dragoon Orta
9. Final Fantasy IV
10. Road and Track Presents: The Need for Speed (can't be "beaten" but I put enough time into to call it "done")

The games I have knocked off in previous summer challenges:

Zone of the Enders 2
Ico
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Panzer Dragoon II
Bonk’s Adventure
Oddworld
Chrono Trigger
No One Lives Forever
Guardian Heroes
Adventure (2600)
MUSHA
Zillion
Gunhed

This an awesome idea. I do this pretty much every summer but I've never made a list or even kept track of which ones I've already beaten somewhere.

1.Dragon Quest 8(PS2)not a classic but Its what I have been working on since exams were over.
2.Gun.Smoke(NES)
3.Demon's Crest(SNES)
4.Jet Grind Radio(DC)
5.Wario Land(VB + rechargeable batteries)
6.Age Of Empires(PC)
7.Donkey Kong 94(GB)
8.A Boy and His Blob(NES)I dont think I ever made it past the caverns as a kid.
9.Chrono Trigger(PS1)
10. Starfox(SNES) Kinda surprised at myself for never beating this one seeing as how much I would play Starfox64

EDIT *Changed list

Great idea!!! Here's some classics I need to complete.

My top ten:
1. Adventure (Atari 2600)
2. Diablo II (PC)
3. Donkey Kong 64 (N64)
4. Final Fantasy Adventure (GB)
5. Golden Sun (GBA)
6. Ninja Gaiden (NES)
7. Faxanadu (NES)
8. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES)
9. Altered Beast (Genesis)
10. Parasite Eve (PS)
11. Xenogears (PS)

EDIT: Added an 11th game. A bit too ambitious? Perhaps, but I need to finish Xenogears.

I dunno if this is doable. I am actually working this summer (usually I don't) and I have classes. Plus, Ninja Gaiden will surely own my ass as it always does. But I shall try my best!

Didn't participate in the last two, opting to focus on just generally beating games those years. Since I am not focusing on that this year I figure I may as well do this instead.

My list in no particular order:

1. Sly Cooper (PS3 port)
2. Altered Beast (Master System)
3. Real Myst (PC)
4. Star Fox 64 (N64)
5. Sonic CD (Gamecube port)
6. Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars (PC)
7. Another World (PC)
8. The Legend of Zelda (NES)
9. Tomb Raider: Anniversary (PC)
10. Serious Sam: The First Encounter (PC)

As for a goal, Im going to say by the end of August.

@Protronrob: The PS1 port of Chrono Trigger has horrendous load times. I would recommend emulating the SNES version. Or if its an option, the DS version.

yeah i know. i did consider playing the other 007 on the N64, but i went with the 2004 released of Goldyeneye Rouge Agent instead just because i love the multiplayer. maybe i should turn #7 to Mike Tyson Punch Out?

edit: #7 changed.
