Indie Watch 2012

Post by J T »

It's time for a new year of indie games!

We still haven't seen a release from everything in last year's thread:

Here is a new title I'm interested in:

For fans of Herzog Zwei, this game should be a real treat. Though this is not a sequel or anything like that, there are some similarities in the core principles. Tactics and combat will also share a mixture of Defense of the Ancients anda twin-stick shooter. This could be an interesting one.

Dear Esther

Dear Esther has been available as a Half Life 2 mod since about 2008, but the game is about to see a revamped independent release on February 14th, 2012. So far, it looks breathtaking and haunting. I'm looking forward to it. It will be priced at $9.99.

Does "I am Alive" count as an indie title? It looks so good. It looks like a combination of Metro 2033 and Uncharted. Can't wait. I think it comes out the third week of February.

I Am Alive is being published by Ubisoft, so it's probably not indie, though it does look kind of cool.

Torchlight 2, Fez, and Monaco should really need no introduction.

The Witness, from the maker of Braid, is the other big one I'm looking forward to. Myst 6? Sign me up!

I can't wait for Dr. Esther. I never played the original but I've only read good things about it.

This is a really slick looking voxel-based game. Right now it looks like it will have some zelda-esque gameplay with questing, adventuring, and sword fighting. The developers were nearly bought out by Mohjang, and the visual similarities to Minecraft are obvious.

Prom Week

Image

Why would I be interested in an ugly game about ugly teens going to prom? Because it uses advanced social interaction AI that has been developed by the same people that brought you Facade awhile back. That game allowed you to type anything you wanted to interact with the characters of a one act play. It was flawed, but incredibly fascinating. Prom Week promises to improve upon that, and it could change the nature of social interaction with AI. Definitely keep an eye on this one, even if it does look like an eyesore of a casual game.

This looks pretty darn awesome. Know anyone who has played it?
