I would consider most of the Mario games Platformers-they all have platforms. But it shouldn't really matter what you call it, as long as its a good game.

I never really appreciated super mario until I was an adult. My favorite as a kid was donkey kong. After playing Mario wii version with my wife last year - I was reintroduced to the awesomeness of marioland. I still like the donkey kong better myself... but probably just for nostalgia purposes.
