December Together Retro - Robots Fighting Robots!
Re: December Together Retro - Robots Fighting Robots!
I am so sad you aren't enjoying Virtual On. It's definitely a different sort of game, but if gives you so many tools for fast, strategic play. That said, it's a much better one-on-one game than it is a game against the CPU.

Yeah, i get that, in fact it isn't my first of this kind, played Dissidia Final Fantasy NT and Gundam Versus this year for the PS4 and while i dislike the same gameplay, quality of life improvements provided by modern consoles like online play make up for it.
Re: December Together Retro - Robots Fighting Robots!
Oh, dude, Oratoria Tangram is awesome! You pretty much have to play it with the twin sticks, though. I've never played the Virtual On games with the normal controllers, but with twin sticks, Oratorio Tangram is possibly the greatest arena fighter out there.
Cyberbots is also super legit. I highly recommend unlocking all of the hidden mechs, even if you're playing the seriously inferior Playstation version. Take a spin through Devilot's story (really all of the characters' story modes are worth playing through) for super great times. Make sure to play through Jin's story also, for that hot ending demo music.
I didn't care for Gun Hazard. It was pretty long and boring. If you like grinding the same/similar stages for 20 to 30 hours, then go for it. For me, the story was fairly uninteresting after the first few hours, and the gameplay was just too much of the same for way too long.
For something a little different, this one's a pretty good time (final boss aside):

Too bad the online isn't available anymore.

Virtual On: OT can be pretty rough on Dreamcast using only the DC controller. It really is a game built around its peripheral. It does tend to work better with modern dual analog setups.
Cyberbots is great, I've got it for PS1 as well. The beat'em up that shares its sprites, Armored Warriors, is also phenomenal. Capcom released a spiritual successor in the form of Kikaioh aka TechRomancer for Arcade and Dreamcast which is a fun game once you get used to the wonky controls. My favorite thing about it is every mech in the game is a reference to an actual anime (with designs by Macross legend Shoji Kawamori) and you can play through branching stories with different ridiculous storylines. There's a ton to unlock and it's just a load of fun from that era when home fighting game ports had a lot of of extra meat on them.

Is the Saturn port better somehow?

Yeah, those controls are exactly why I could never get into TechRomancer. It simply would not click.
Now if you're looking for something obscure, you can always check out the import Super Robot Spirits for the Nintendo 64:

The PS1 port has longer load times (I'm assuming this is not an issue on modern ports?) and is missing a few frames of animation but the difference is minor and wouldn't even be noticed by most people. It plays fine.
Re: December Together Retro - Robots Fighting Robots!
Saturn Virtual-On works well with the Saturn controller because there's enough buttons for everything. ABC for weapons, L/R for rotate (and both is guard), XZ for boost and Y for jump (or flipped, can't remember which). The DC controller removes a couple buttons and then added in the boost attacks.

I didn't really enjoy Kikaio a whole lot, personally. I kind of thought I would get obsessive about unlocking things in it, like Cyberbots, but even though there was a lot more to unlock, that I probably would have liked to see, the costs were kind of exorbitant, and I just didn't really want to play it anymore after going through the story a couple times. A lot of that was because the final boss was a complete asshole, though.

Oh, yeah. Much. It's mostly visual, though (smoother animations, better backgrounds, etc), and most of the bump is from the 1M Ram expansion option. I think in their base forms are fairly similar, aside from one of the monitors in the background of the arena stage.

PlayStation also got a knock-off Virtual On game using mecha from Sunrise called Real Robots: Final Attack. It's kind of decent.

And of course the Gundam Battle Assault games are super fun. BIG ZAM!

Yeah, the final boss is brutal. I probably wouldn't have put up with it either if I hadn't learned how to cheese him (the AI is practically helpless against the block-breaking charge).
