October 2019 Together Retro Poll

by CFFJR Mon Sep 09, 2019 10:31 pm

Now that September is well underway, it is time to vote for October's Together Retro theme!

Like last year, I tried to offer some themes that will still give folks a range of genres to pursue (with one exception). We also have one returning choice that's come up a few times but never been the winner. So let's begin.

Is that a Nightmare in your Pocket?

We need at least one option for fear in the month of Halloween, so consider portable horror games! The only requirements here are that the games must be horror themed and playable on a portable system. If the game has been ported to consoles, or the handheld version is a port, play the handheld version!

Silent Hill Origins
Resident Evil Gaiden
Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare
Dementium: The Ward/Dementium 2
Clock Tower

Virtues of Villainy

Games where you play as the bad guy. You might be a cartoonishly evil antagonist. You might be the hero only because the people you're up against are even worse. Think of Kratos here, who despite being horribly wronged is still a deplorable, murderous monster of a man. You might also play a character who doesn't even realize he's the villain until later in the game. I can think of a few examples of that last one, but for now I won't list them lest they spoil someone. If this option wins we should probably just accept that there are spoilers, but we can discuss it.

Dungeon Keeper
Destroy All Humans
God Of War
GTA/Saint's Row

The Toy Box

A simple one. Any game where you either play as a toy, or takes place within a toy world.

Army Men series
Micro Machines
Toy Story
Clockwork Knight
Toy Commander

Mecha Madness

Games about Mechs and Robits and Cyborgs, oh my. Be they a suit piloted by man or a bot with its own will and power, of any size and function. Giant robot combat, shmups, strategy, beat 'em ups (there's at least a couple!) and anything in between.

Front Mission
Zone of the Enders
Armored Core
Assault Suit Leynos
many, many more.

Industry Icons: Yu Suzuki

Stealth Shenmue pick!

Don't worry, I'm only kidding. Industry Icons will celebrate creators, developers, and characters with a big influence on the game industry as a whole. This one will focus on Yu Suzuki. Any game he worked on is fair. Wikipedia has a handy dandy list for your reference. I for one had no idea he had a hand in 18 wheeler. Surprising.

And that's it for now. I hope some of these options are appealing to everyone. You get 2 choices, but you can not change your vote. The poll will close on 9/17.

Damn, these are some stellar categories!

I'm kiiiinda hoping that Nightmare in your Pocket wins, because it'll give me an excuse to really try and hunt down Nanashi No Game (The Nameless Game) for DS. I've heard it's very good~

I voted Nightmare Pocket and Villainy. Toy Box was a close 3rd, I've been wanting to play some of the Army Men games.

For Nightmare Pocket, I have a few games that I've been meaning to play. Kid Dracula on the Gameboy, not sure why I have yet to try this one. And Luigi's Mansion on the 3DS. I picked it up when it was released, but didn't play much of it.

If Virtues of Villainy is picked, I could still play Kid Dracula! Another pick for me would be Disgaea, which is another game that I've long wanted to play (I've played several hours of it several years ago). I suppose I could also play Disgaea on the DS if Is that a Nightmare in your Pocket? is picked, but I'd rather play it on PS2 or Steam.

My Sale Thread - I am selling around three quarters of my video game collection as well as some other odds and ends!

I want to buy Universal Game Cases, if you have any spares please PM me! I'm looking to only deal with members that have good BST feedback on this forum.

Pocket Nightmares is the clear winner here, folks. It's OCTOBER. And horror games on portable systems is such a cool niche.

(My other vote was for the toys, because why not? I personally don't enjoy playing as "the bad guy," so skipped that one. There are plenty of cool mech games to choose from, but the other two options definitely appealed to me more and seem more interesting. Yu Suzuki rules, but I've played so many of those games that again, the other two options were just more interesting. I'd still have fun if that one won.)

Didn't we pretty much do a mecha games category a couple years ago? I hope we don't repeat that again.

No, we didn't. It came up in votes a couple of times (from Exhuminator and Gunstar Green, possibly one more escaping my memory) with different limitations each time, but it never won. The best result was losing the tie breaker against 80s Ladies Night.

If a specific mech game came up before the format change for TR (which I honestly don't remember) I'd still call it fine because the old format focused on individual games.

But either way I wouldn't repeat a theme that had already won in the past. Not intentionally at least, but I went through past threads to be sure of that.

That is ridiculously helpful and I will be referencing it in the future. You are a gentleman and a scholar Michi.
