Together Retro: FMV Frenzy
Re: Together Retro: FMV Frenzy
To be fair, I had no idea a Double Dragon game using FMV clips from the movie existed. I'm glad he played it. It seems like such a strange oddity that I wouldn't have been aware of otherwise.

Same. I also thought it was a pretty funny pick. I know that there was a PlayStation port of that game (in Japan, at least), and that it is available on PSN. I may have to pick that up now.
In any event, everyone needs to chill out. This is supposed to be fun, and I always appreciate learning about new games.

It is literally a neo geo fighting game with roughly 20 seconds of fmv footage. It isn't much of an oddity. It is a solid fighting game though. Look... he can play whatever he likes and that is perfectly fine, but I personally feel like it is just dismissive of the selection this month. It's like playing call of duty black ops for text adventure month, or saints row IV.
I'll leave it alone and sorry for raising a stink about it.

At least in my mind the month was about exploring that ERA of gaming where FMV was the next big thing, thus was shoe-horned into games that it really didn't need to be a part of. So I think reading player experience of these sorts of fringe games juxtaposes nicely w/ those of you playing 100% FMV games. Shrug.

I mean, Black Ops has Zork in it, so that seems okay by me too

I agree with Noise on this. The spirit of the month is to explore how FMV was used in the 90s. The fact that even a Neo Geo fighter shoe-horned in 20 seconds of FMV says something about how important low-quality digitized video of live actors was to the developers and publishers of the time. I think it provides a neat bit of perspective, and as a spectator to this month, I'm looking forward to little asides like this to help inform and enrich the more traditional offerings. I think it's awesome that Ex found and recognized this.

As long as you actually play Zork in it, sure, why not? That's another cool easter egg I wouldn't have known about otherwise, not being familiar with Black Ops.
I think in the REAL spirit of TR, we should not pass judgment on how people choose to celebrate the month's themes.

Again... I am backing off and letting him play the way he likes to play. I get all uppity considering his endless dismissiveness of the choice throughout the voting process. I'm just being a defensive ass in response.

To be fair, I was kinda dismissive, too. Let's just say Wirehead didn't change my mind about dedicated FMV games. Shinobi Legions, on the other hand, is starting to. There have been some frustrating bits, but it ain't bad. Of course, it's just cheesy FMV sequences and digitized actors in a 2D platformer, so... yup.
Re: Together Retro: FMV Frenzy
I think a lot of FMV adventure-style games do end up focusing too much on the FMV and not enough on the game. Being able to do FMV in a game was kind of revelatory, but it attracted too many people who would rather have been making movies (badly) than video games (badly). But after the rush of games that relied too heavily on the look without the substance to back it, you did start to get more developed titles that improved gameplay. When looking at those which didn't have great gameplay, you almost have to look at them through the same lens as old bad movies. That said, if you think you might be able to enjoy the better titles (assuming the genre doesn't just completely turn you off), now is your chance to take a pass at them. I mean, yeah, some of the participants will be deliberately hunting down the schlock to play, but hopefully some folks will engage with the stronger titles and come to appreciate what the FMV adventure/puzzle/interactive movie genre could do in good hands. I'm hopeful that I'll get to read some write-ups from folks who found a gem and were enthralled by it.

Yeah, I am hoping somebody else finally gives Realms of the Haunting a go. It's an interesting take on the FPS that I really enjoyed. I wish it didn't have to remain so obscure.

That's definitely one I've been thinking about. I've got it installed, and gave it a go last year for a bit. Definitely different from your typical FPS, too.
