Hmm...

All the Rest of Dragon Quest: I have weird compulsions about the order I play games in and spinoffs wreak havoc with them. I’d want to play DQ4 before diving into Torneko and I’m playing a Mystery Dungeon game for February. I’d probably do the first Slime MoriMori game in Japanese, since I enjoyed me some Rocket Slime. I get the sense that this’d be more text heavy, but I’d give it a go regardless.

Classic '90s RTS: I never did play the original WarCraft.

Eighties’ Ladies’ Night: Probably go with King’s Quest 4, since I’m reading the HG101 Guide To Classic Adventure Games. I might give The Guardian Legend a look, but I’m not a huge Compile fan.

Koei Klassics: Does Koei Tecmo count? I have a copy of Fatal Frame 2 I’ve been meaning to get to...

Premillennial Mech Madness: I’d probably do Terra Nova from good ol’ Looking Glass

If we end up with Premillenial Mech Madness, I will go with:

Metal Marines
Ranger X
Target Earth

All three of these are on my “to beat” list of classic games.

Edit: oh yeah...I guess I could do Herzog Zwei, too.

Oh hey, another candidate for me then. Which is better?

And I totally forgot that I own Ranger X. I have only played it a couple times but I didn’t really care for it. I know it’s a cult classic of sorts (small cult I imagine), but it just didn’t do it for me. I’ll give it another try though if mechs win.

I'd say MUSHA is more forgiving and playable. Robo Aleste builds on the system but it ends up being harder and personally I found the weaponsto be a little less satisfying.

Wait, does Herzog Zwei have mechs?

You play as a transforming jet ala Macross.

Absolutely fantastic hidden gem.

Oh drat, I just realized a troublesome technicality. I'd been keeping Metal Storm (NES) in my back pocket as a go to selection for some good ol' mech blasting action. But ... Wikipedia is now telling me that the M-308 featured in Metal Storm is actually a robot rather than a piloted mech. I mean the cover art features a prominent cockpit and everything!

So just as clarification where do we stand on this differentiation? Do unpiloted autonomous 'mechs' still count as mechs? To draw from another example, I think it would be a stretch to say that the 'virtuaroids' featured in Virtual On: Cyber Troopers aren't at the very least closely related to mechs. Just trying to get my various selections lined up ahead of time.

I'd say it counts regardless but the Japanese Wikipedia has a different story stating it does have a pilot named Lt. Greg Burton.

Wow, interesting; thanks man! That would certainly make more sense of the cover art IMO. Yet another puzzling Western localization choice of games in the 80's.

Play that Metal Storm. It's awesome. Then see if you're hardcore enough to play the second loop.
