Ack, I think it is safe to say that you and I have opinions that align just about exactly when it comes to the original Bioshock. I just wanted to put out there that you did an excellent job explaining it

On that note, I think a lot of what you said regarding narrative fall into complaints I have about Infinite as well. That was also a game that came off like it thought it was far more clever than it was actually being. While it did have a point it was trying to make (I think? It seemed to really go out of its way to undermine it in the DLC), it thought it was doing it far more cleverly than it actually was.

I found Infinite to be way more enjoyable tho.

Overall Infinite is the best of the trilogy, though the aesthetic of the original can't really be found elsewhere. And while I agree with you guys about how the plot point that bugs you, at the end of the day I found the original part of it to fit in that "hah, that's kinda clever" bucket and then I moved on to shooting more dudes.

I'm with Popo. I get why people want to intricately dissect the game and narrative because of its legacy, but I don't look into it too deeply and just have fun with it. I don't think anyone is going to argue the final stretch of Bioshock is the best part or that the random Quake final boss is good at all, but I still have fun in those last portions with the cool apartment level and getting equipped with you know what at the end. Infinite is even more convoluted (and maybe why it's less popular in some circles I guess), but I think its ridiculous plot just makes it more fun. The System Shock blueprints and other influences are certainly in these but by the end of the day these games as their full package experience are all pretty unique and awesome for that.

Bioshock didn't have the best shooting mechanics, but in that way it actually aligns pretty well with System Shock 2.

Yeah the game has never really been about shooting for me. It is all about situations. You enter a room and there are enemies and environmental factors you can use to your advantage. Do you use water to electrocute, fire to ignite, hack bots to help? That was how I viewed the mechanics and intentions for their game design.

Exactly. It's all about gear selection. Which plasmids did you bring? How are you going to kill this group as opposed to the last group? Important questions.
